@Mae: I don't know if that is from the very start for everyone, but I have been and I haven't gained any weight. My belly is still swollen to the size of a semi, but no weight gain.

I guess what I am more so trying to say is if you've been eating healthier, that's great. If you tend to reach for potato chips, soda, and all that when you have cravings try to reach for something better like almond (I like oven roasted chocolate myself), or frozen yogurt over ice cream to try and combat the cravings, but still stay within a reasonable amount of calories.

If you truly want to know how many calories you should be eating per day (with a goal of losing 1lb per week is since 1lb per week is healthy), you can take your total daily energy expenditure - 20%. Total daily energy expenditure can be calculated by a number of websites. I just Googled it and do 3 different calculators since some give you a really high calorie and some are really low. Then I take the middle number I find. So, for instance, if one website says I need 1600 and another says I need 2000, I would probably go with a happy medium of 1800.

Even if you don't do all of that, try not to sweat it. I know you said you might balloon up if you listen to your body, but I really think it won't so long as when your body says, "I'm hungry" you reach for some carrots or cucumbers rather than cookies and chocolate.

This has happened in all 3 of my pregnancies. With really bad morning sickness and an increase in metabolism, it doesn't matter what I eat or do activity wise I always drop 15-20 lbs. I would say I am average build.

I got pregnant after a 25lb loss, but still wanted to lose at least 25 more. I was fairly careful with what I ate (but did what I had to to beat morning sickness), and managed to keep my weight gain fairly minimal (20lbs).
That being said- while you can be conscious of your weight while pregnant, just don't let it stress you out at all. If you're careful, you'll gain what your body/baby needs you to!

When I got pregnant, I had similar concerns as you. I found that early pregnancy, food was just not appealing. So I lost 6 lbs. Then in 2nd and 3rd trimester I just ate when I was hungry, and I've only gained 10 lbs (net).

My take-home message right now, is just try to keep eating healthy and exercising, but know that pregnancy is an exercise in learning that we have no control over anything. Your body will probably gain what it needs to. Congratulations on the BFP!!

I got pregnant at about 190 lbs. It was highest at the time despite a lot of healthy eating. My OB mentioned doing a health program during pregnancy. I never followed up on it. I only gained about 25 lbs during my pregnancy. I also walk a ton in the city and did to appointments.

Right now, I'm a year pp and working off my extra weight from breastfeeding. I'm hoping to get down to 180 lbs by Christmas to consider conceiving again. My thought is that I can go up to 200 from that easier and safer. When I have my annual appointment, I'm going to ask my OB about being on WW during pregnancy since they have allowances for it. I've heard of physicians being okay with it as long as the baby's growing and has enough amniotic fluid.

@Mae: Honestly, your body is going to do whatever it is your body is going to do. Try your best to eat healthy and make good choices, but some things are out of your complete control. It's best to make peace with the process and to not let it take away from your joy. :) Happy and Healthy 9 Months mama!

@megz06: wow-- an extra 300-500/day?! is that from the very start?? I guess this is something to ask the nurse as soon as I get to talk to her.

I feel like one issue for people like me who obviously have issues self-regulating food is that I honestly don't know how much I should be eating. I've been doing like 1600/day (+ eating back calories burned exercising) and losing about 1lb/week.

I guess I worry that if I just "eat what my body tells me to" I'm going to gain like 80 lbs because I feel like my body's hunger meter is broken. :)

I'm not really worried with LOSING weight during pregnancy or with coming out of it looking better or whatever. I guess I just feel like my body right now is not at a healthy weight and I want to do whatever I can to make sure I and the baby stay healthy throughout.

@Mae: Girl, I am with you! I started My Fitness Pal in February at 190 pounds. I was tired, winded, high BP, high cholesterol, and I looked terrible. My anxiety attacks were also happening several times a day. I have since dropped to 162. When I found out I was pregnant, and I was super excited, but a little part of me was bummed that I have been putting in all this hard work, and now I was going to gain more weight. I also wasn't nearly at goal (goal for me was 130-ish).

Anyway, I told my Dr I wanted to gain the least amount as possible. She told me I should at least be giving myself an extra 300-500 calories per day (which is what you will need after baby is born as well because of breast feeding if you go that route). That is also what all my friends said on MFP too.

Honestly, this is about the health of the baby. It doesn't mean you have to eat whatever you want, but it also means you can't just survive on a lettuce salad for lunch. You can still make a healthy, portioned lunch that gives you all your nutrition but won't be fattening.

I upped my calories by 400, and I eat at that. If I really feel hungry, I will eat more. If you need any help let me know!

I will preface this by saying I haven't experienced this situation BUT I am a bit of a health nut, so I would just suggest continuing to live the new, healthier lifestyle you've been living and stop weighing yourself. You may lose some weight in the beginning, but then again, you may not. As long as you are making good eating choices, hitting your minimum caloric intake for the day, and keeping up a form of physical activity, I think you will find yourself in much better shape and better prepared to continue your weight loss program post-baby. I think getting caught up on the numbers on the scale will just be setting yourself up for failure though, so I'd try to ignore the weigh ins at the doctor's office as much as you can and focus on how you're feeling instead.

Good luck and congratulations on your BFP!

ETA: just to clarify, when I said 'hitting your minimum caloric intake', I didn't mean that you shouldn't eat more than that if your body is telling you it needs more food. I meant to make sure that you hit AT LEAST that number of calories per day. Sorry if that was confusing.

I wasn't trying, but I did lose weight in my pregnancy, mostly from HG, but I was also doing aquacise 3x per week. In addition, I had GD and the GD diet kept me from really gaining in my 3rd tri.

Yes, dieting while pregnant is a very bad idea. I went into pregnancy dieting, and I didn't really know what a more normal calorie level was, so I continued to eat below my hunger for the first trimester. Eventually that just wasn't possible, and I stopped. Then, at 41 weeks, my placenta failed, and I had to have a difficult induction due to low amniotic fluid. I later found a study linking dieting in the first trimester to low amniotic fluid post term.

Who knows if it was really linked, but I know that I won't be restricting next pregnancy.

I would not go into pregnancy intentionally trying to lose weight. But with that said, I'm down about 15 pounds from PP weight at 26+5 today. I was down about 20 a month ago. I was diagnosed with GD at 10 weeks and have been eating healthy and limiting carbs (but not eliminating).

Just don't set yourself up for disappointment. Your body's going to gain fluid, placenta, baby, blood volume, etc. You won't know what's being gained when, and if you're obsessed with the scale it might lead you to make unhealthy choices for the baby.

Thanks for the input! It will be interesting to see how it goes. My husband and I have been doing a lot more activities lately and walking every night, which I think has definitely helped my weight loss so far. I've just never really seen someone come out the other side of pregnancy weighing less than before. People seem to be small and end up small or be big and stay big (or bigger).

Eat healthy, eat when your hungry & take up walking. You'll be fine. I'm a big girl pregnant with twins. This was also the second thing that crossed my mind. I've gained some weight but most of that is my fault, I've ate nothing but crap.

I wasn't trying, but I started out my first pregnancy overweight and lost 11 pounds in the first half, and then gained back 20 (so, positive 9 pounds in the end). After I delivered, I was 20 pounds under my pre preg weight.

Just continue to eat healthy, but don't starve yourself. If you get queasy, eat what you can handle.

I just got my BFP and the biggest thing that is concerning me right now, besides just hoping for a sticky baby, is my weight. I've been overweight my entire adult life and had planned to lose more before I got pregnant. The last time I spoke to my doc about it I told her my goal was 50 lbs and she said "that's a good idea."

Well I've only dropped about 15 and here I am. I didn't get serious about it, honestly, until 2 months ago and in that time I've lost 12 lbs through eating healthier food and starting a workout routine. My doc did say I was good to keep exercising and (obviously!) eating healthy during pregnancy.

I guess my question is... has anyone else been in the process of losing weight when they got pregnant and continued their progress through pregnancy? Obviously I understand I will gain pregnancy weight. But it seems like if I'm being healthy I should be losing fat while gaining baby, right? Or am I just totally crazy to think I'm going to have any progress on my healthy goals in the next year?
