It's normal. Our appetites aren't the same every day, and we get distracted and put off meals, and so do our babies. Your LO is starting to notice the world more and isn't so focused on eating. Also, babies start to nurse more efficiently and quickly as they get older--no more marathon nursing sessions like when they were brand new!

He's probably just distracted. You can try nursing him using a nursing cover at home so he can concentrate. Or nurse him in a quiet room.

My 13 month old still does this. She has a week where she will eat until she's blue in the face, and then other weeks where she barely wants anything. Yesterday it was fruit, and fruit only. Your baby won't starve - they'll eat what they need.

@dswx3me: My nursing necklace was a mommy necklace (dangling donut version). It was decent enough to wear out and about and to work but still engaging for my son. http://www.mommynecklaces.com/

This happened JUST before DS got his first tooth. I was convinced he was going to get dehydrated and I'd need to bring him to the hospital while I was on vacation. Once his tooth broke through the gums he went back to normal :)

I've never heard of a nursing necklace....that sounds interesting.I'll have to bing it. :)

I would throw a blanket over him, but he sweats so much I feel bad for him...or maybe its because I'm naturally claustrophobic and I feel like he may be too....lol.

I tried the dim very quiet location this last feeding. it worked great until my cell phone rang. then he was all wide eyed and ready to look around....so I guess distraction is all it is. :)

thank you all!

I went through this as well, and it drove me crazy. They are now just more aware of their surroundings. What i did was feed her as soon as she woke up from her nap (in a dim room) because she was still a bit sleepy and less distracted. Unfortunately, it doesn't get better. I'm thinking of getting one of those nursing necklaces to help focus her attention on one thing.

MY baby went through that stage too and she would get distracted easily. Sometimes I would throw a blanket over her while nursing so she would calm down

It isn't uncommon around that age. They can start to see farther and focus more so they get very distracted by everything possible. Around then is when I started wearing a nursing necklace to keep my son focused toward the breast. Also, try nursing in quiet, dark/dim locations with absolutely no distractions and see if that helps.

my 4.5 month old hasn't been very hungry the past few days. or it doesn't seem like he's hungry anyways...and only nurses for short little spans of time, very often....which I have taken to calling "snacks" because thats what they seem to be....is this normal?

he's not abnormally fussy, just seems too excited. wants to be moving around and up looking at everything....

he nurses well before bed time, like usual....and in the night when he wakes up for feedings....but during the day he eats so little it seems...is he getting more than I think. just more efficient with his nursing maybe? also, he is eating solids twice a day. mid morning and early evening....
