@ShootingStar: I'm glad it turned up. We've had things go missing and we've accidentally taken stuff home that wasn't ours (that the teacher put in LOs cubbie). Most of the time, it happens when our nanny or DH picks up LO, since they don't know as well what stuff is hers. I think everything that's gone missing has eventually turned up.

My kids go to a large center daycare and this has never happened. The teachers are pretty good at knowing what the kids come in with each day. Man, I would be pissed! I've had socks go missing but even those are eventually found in a couple days and those aren't even labeled. I'd first talk to the teachers and ask them to put up a sign or something to return it. Hope you get it back!!

So last night they did send out an email, though my husband told them the wrong color coat. This morning I looked all around in the closet room, even looked in a girl's bag that had a vaguely similar jacket (bad, I know). I ended up finding it when I got something out of DS's cubby - it was in another boy's cubby. IDK how they missed it last night when the owner and the assistant director were looking for it.

Definitely talk to the teacher and ask them to send a notice to parents. My husband used to do drop off and I did pick up, and sometimes i had no idea what LO was wearing that day when I picked her up.

So one day, when her teachers handed me a plastic bag with clothes that had been peed on, I saw a flash of pink polka dotted fabric and assumed it was a shirt we had. Then I got home and found our washer was broken, so I didn't even open that bag of pee clothes for a week.

When I finally did--they weren't her clothes! They daycare ladies had given someone else's pee clothes to me and I kept them for a week!

So yeah, it happens.

This happened to DS's rainboots once. I showed up to school and they were gone, and he had no other shoes so I "stole" someone else's rainboots from the closet (that I knew weren't being used). I sent an email to the director that day with a pic of the boots. They were returned the next day (and I returned the stolen ones  ). I think this was just a case of a daddy who put the wrong shoes on his kid. I would definitely contact the director with a photo though. At least that way it will be documented. I hope it turns up!

I wouldn't immediately assume someone stole it. We've had instances where the teachers swapped things by mistake. Or the kids swapped items (I know your LO is too young). Anyway, usually within the next few days it turns up. I would just ask the teacher. It's possible it ended up in someone else's bag by mistake. I've had other kids stuff end up in our nag and we'll just bring it in the next day.

i think this happens by accident a lot. i've found other people's things in my LO's cubby and i did inadvertently take someone else's jacket home. DH does drop-off and i do pick-up, so i didn't know what LO was wearing so i just assumed the jacket in the cubby was the one that he wore. nope! anyway, maybe you could post a sign with a picture of the coat? i've seen that done in my daycare. the sign was only up for a day so i assume that it was returned asap.

This has happened to us 2 times with DS - and his name is in it so it baffles me as to why someone else would take it even if it was the same exact coat as their childs.

Once it was returned the very next day

Once it wasn't returned for 1 month - still curious what happened - did someone grab it and keep forgetting to return it??

We get emails all the time about missing stuff. Someone recently put boots that were two sizes too big (and probably labelled) on their kid the other day. I would just let the daycare know and ask them to send an email to all parents.

It's not happened to us, but I've seen notices on classroom doors about missing items. I've also seen someone turn in receipts to the administration when swim day stuff went missing. So there might be a chance in getting some assistance for the lost item.

Yeah, it happens to us sometimes. The teachers will ask around and sometimes the missing item turns up but usually we are SOL.

Yesterday I dropped off DS at daycare and put his bag and his new winter coat on his hook (it's labelled with his name). When DH picked him up he said he didn't see it and assumed I brought him in without one. I forgot about it this morning, but tonight DH was looking for it and it's nowhere to be found.

So I'm kind of pissed. This is a brand new coat he's only gotten a couple weeks use out of. And apparently someone stole it? I can't think of what else might have happened to it. Nobody should have accidentally taken it, it was on his hook and he might be the only one in his class to even have a jacket. He's still in the infant room and most of the babies are still in bucket seats with bunting on them.

Has anyone had this happen at daycare before? Did the daycare do anything about it, like ask parents if someone accidentally took it? Or offer to replace the taken item? Or am I just SOL?
