@MamaG: ouch I'm sorry your little one is going through this. I hope it heals quickly but from my experiences nails can be slow to grow back.

My four year old just lost the nail on her big toe. Her pediatrician said to give it 6 months to grow back. I'm just keeping a bandaid on it for now. She tells everyone she meets about it. :silly:

@MamaG: yeah, that can be a challenge! For the few times we've had to keep a bandaid on LO we also wrapped it with a self-sticking bandage over the bandaid. It was reusable for a few days at a time. Might be an idea. Good luck!

@GoGoSnoGirl: that's what I'm afraid of. Trying to keep a bandaid on a thumb of a 2.5 year old. She loves band aids. She also loves taking them off.

I lost my middle fingernail in high school after closing in a door. It was very sensitive & it felt like it took forever to grow back. I kept it covered with a bandaid until the nail grew enough to cover the nail bed.

K lost a nail last fall and honestly I had forgotten about it till your post.

She mysteriously wound up with a big bruise under a nail, likely from getting it shut in something but no idea what. She never complained about it, except when dh thought her nail was dirty and tried to wipe it off. Eventually the nail did fall off and grew back normal.

Our story is definitely on the low key end.

I lost my toenail several years ago. It hurt and bled a lot in the moment when it happened, but after that it was fine. It took forever to grow back in, but it didn't hurt after the first couple of days.

When my DD was 2, she dropped my glass water bottle on her big toe. It was an awful experience that left me feeling absolutely horrible and she lost her nail. She couldn't walk for a couple of days but it took a few weeks for her to actually lose her nail. I just kept it wrapped in bandaids and gauze and she wore socks until the skin looked healed. I was super worried that the nail would grow in funny but it's perfectly fine. It took 6 months for her toe nail to come totally back. Maybe fingernails are faster?

My one year old lost his fingernail :( It fell off really quick (we think he got it stuck in something as it first turned purple and the nail bed was bruised) and the new one started growing back fairly quickly. He didn't seem fazed by it so maybe the nature of the injury is what is bothering your LO? I imagine it would hurt for a bit. Our pedi said we didn't have to do any special cleaning so I've left it be and just wash his hands normally. We were told it would take awhile (she guessed up to a year) before a normal nail grows back though. His current nail is kind of funny looking. Hope this helps!

It gets better! I have lost my toe nails a couple of times. I'm really prone to them stopping growing and then having to have a new nail grow in. Recently, however, I had to have one removed because it got super infected and swollen. After it was removed it took about a week to stop being tender. And it was in rough shape due to bleeding/swelling so I bet your daughters will heal more quickly. Now it's ugly but feels fine!

Tell me about losing a nail? How does it feel? How long until it grows back? When does the pain stop?

My 2.5 year old got her thumb smashed in an interior door this weekend. The doc told us she would lose her nail. It's already gone. I'm not sure where it went or when. She's wearing a splint to protect it from bumps but it's not staying on well. It seems sensitive to everything. She's reluctant to use her hand and cries when we clean it or change her bandage. The original injury was Sunday, it's now Tuesday. Please tell me it gets better.
