I am so sorry :( That really stinks! I know that we were interested in a house before the one we have now, but things fell through & we are so happy now that they did! I hope that happens for you. Good luck :)

Wow! I didn't realize there were areas still going through this type of market. I'm so sorry you had to deal with that.

We lost out on the first house we put an offer in on in Maryland. We waited our full 5 days after placing the offer and then the agent came back telling us the sellers had taken their home off the market! Apparently, they were out of the country and using their real estate agent as a house sitter. :-\

It all worked out in the end. I found a job in NC not long after that and we moved here and found something much bigger, for the same price! Everything happens for a reason.

@Witz: I'm so sorry! We were in your shoes less than a month ago. We had an offer that was accepted on a short sale in Ballard and lost it. We mourned for a day and then hit the "road" again to find something - we're on a tight timeline with a baby arriving in early August. We went out on a Saturday, fell in love with a house during an open house, made an offer and it was accepted. We close on Friday and move next week. We're now moving to Bellevue but actually love the house even more and feel like we're in a better school district. The commute to downtown will be a little further for DH but it's worth the gorgeous house that we'll be moving into...I promise that you'll find something even better!! I do know though that the housing market is tough - not a lot of good out there at the moment. Good luck!

@Mrs. Jacks: If only it was in our price range, I'd be all over that. Would love to live in that neighborhood! But I'm sure a home in Maple Leaf wouldn't work out for us.

@Witz: The market right now is a mess! Short sales are so hard and can drag and drag, the number of standard sales are few, ugh. We're buying a house in Burien, and it's been so hard to get the seller to negotiate on anything. We have an offer on a house we love near Des Moines that we like even more, but it's a short sale and 2 other offers have fallen through so we're hanging on until we absolutely have to pull out on that one, but we're not placing our bets on it (so we have the other offer going on the standard sale). We're so ready to be done with it all.

I can't believe they did that!!

We lost out on the first house we put an offer on. It was a foreclosure/divorce situation, and we offered asking price. They accepted our offer, and before we could sign the paperwork someone came in and offered way above asking price... and had CASH. The bank took their offer over ours.

I'm also in camp "everything happens for a reason". We ended up finding a similar house, in a better neighborhood/school district, for LESS than the foreclosure home and went under contract on our 1 year wedding anniversary.

Your dream house will come along! I just know it!

Argh, how frustrating! We had the same problems with difficult sellers (in the Seattle area too) but finally we found a house that met our criteria but we most definitely had to fight for it. So many times we questioned if it was the right choice because it felt like it shouldn't have taken everything out of us! Most of our savings, our time, our energy was exhausted by the time we closed.

Keep searching, I know it's heartbreaking to have your mind and heart set on a home and picture your future family living there but there will be another house that will be even better! And who knows, maybe that other offer's financing won't work out, it's happened before :)

Good luck!!

I'm sorry that really sucks for you. I know how hard it can be to get attached to a place.. But given how the real estate market is right now the sellers may have been taking a big hit on the sale as it is, and may have even been underwater, so from their perspective they may have really needed every penny they could get. Like artbee Im in the everything happens for a reason camp. You'll find your perfect home soon!

@Witz - sorry to hear it :( Maybe try the Ravenna area? Still a great neighborhood, and probably a little less expensive than the others. Our first (rental) house was in Ravenna and we loved it. DH got downtown easily with the 70s busses.

Our journey into real estate was a disaster. We fell in love with a short sale, and almost lost it multiple times. We even had to delay closing by a day because the mortgage insurance company refused to insure us at the last minute! With some extra help we were able to come up with 20% down, so we were able to tell them to go jump.

The right house (with good sellers) will come along!

@Mrs.Someone: We're looking at Capitol Hill, Madison Valley, Queen Anne, etc. We're open to nicer parts of the CD and other places like that. Just somewhere that's nice enough to have kids and where we can get to downtown relatively easily, as we both work downtown. There is just *nothing* available right now, and that's why we were so so so excited that we were able to land one. Or at least we thought we had :'(

Oh no! I'm in the everything happens for a reason camp, and maybe that home just wasn't meant to be yours and you'll find an even better one.

We almost lost our house too. Our offer was accepted... and then they did the inspection. There was just too much wrong with it, including needing a new roof, and we didn't have the money to fix it up. So we had to say no and I was pretty devistated. We started looking for other houses, but then our realtor called and said they decided to lower the price for us, so we bought it.

My husband and I are trying to buy a home in Seattle and we just failed on yet another attempt to buy a home (third time). This time was particularly difficult... it was just barely above our price range, but for a variety of reasons (too many to list), we felt that it might be worth it to try to work something out to bridge the gap. It was a tortured decision, though, because not only did we have to ask our parents for a little cash to make it work (which we didn't want to do), but we had to decide whether this home would be worth postponing our plans to start TTC later this year for an additional year. In the end, we decided that this home would be such a great place (and neighborhood) to raise our future children that the wait would be worth it -- we did it for "them." So, we made an offer and after some back-and-forth and some very hard work by our agent, it was accepted! We were so ecstatic! We shared the news with our families (who had also become very emotionally involved, as they helped us to make the decision and come up with additional money to make the offer), while our agent revised our original offer to reflect the terms that we had agreed to with the seller. In that one-hour window, another buyer came along and put down a better offer, and the seller accepted it -- EVEN THOUGH THEY HAD ALREADY ACCEPTED OURS! No, it hadn't been signed yet, but literally they had the paperwork in hand and had already agreed to it when they received this other offer. They called us and said that "out of respect for us" they were letting us know that they had received a higher offer, I guess to see if we could match/better it. We had already put forth our best and final offer, so that wasn't an option. And there would have been no guarantee that they would not have turned around and given the other buyer the same opportunity. But really, if they had actually respected us, wouldn't they have honored the deal we agreed to? There are no words to describe how devastated and infuriated we are right now. We knew this was going to be a difficult journey, but I never expected something like this to happen.

Has anyone else experienced the frustration of the current real estate market?
