@Bao: Btw, I forgot to mention about this lotion (Vanicream), also recommended by my kids' allergist. It's more lotion like and great for eczema as well.

DD has eczema, and she gets dry patches that can break skin if we don't moisturizer. Dr recommended that we use a daily thick cream, such as Eucerin or Aquafor but if skin is broken then we need to use a prescribed antibacterial lotion to heal that area. Do not use a common lotion because dr said its useless since it's so runny

Both of my boys had eczema due to allergies when they were babies and their allergist recommended Aquaphor right after a bath. Literally as soon as you dry them put it on while their skin is still moist to help absorb it faster. That has worked the best in terms of dry skin. My boys are almost 2 and almost 5 and rarely have itchy skin; and their skin feels so soft too throughout the day. Vaseline works just as well but Aquaphor is thicker which I liked much better. My boys usually shower then go to bed so most of it won't smear all over our things. :P I use it on my hands and lip right before I go to bed every night and it's been helpful for me too.

LO has ezcema and our Ped recommended Hydrolatum. It's basically whipped Vaseline and it works great! We put in on once at night before bed and it's been amazing!

Vaseline is the only thing that worked for us to stop the scratching. I use shea moisture brand bar and shampoo in the bath/shower, then she gets slathered in vaseline. It grosses me out, but it works! They make a baby one with a powdered one if the smell is too much for you.

I buy the target brand aveeno lotion, it's with the regular lotion. Then, on the bad areas use aquaphor (I get the tub of it). Aquaphor makes such a difference in my LO after even just one day.

Cerave! I use it on LO. I get the kind in the tub (rather than the pump). It's thicker/creamier and definitely not greasy.

I struggled finding it, but CVS and Target both sell it but its with the facial products (not lotion, which is where I kept looking).

@Bao: My LO is also allergic to cow's milk, eggs, peanuts, and dust mites. Any of those can affect his eczema unfortunately. If he does eat something with one of his allergies, it stays in his system for about 2 weeks and affects his eczema spots. His skin gets worse in the winter due to the dry air.

I'll Def bring up to the ped and maybe even ask for a dermatologist reco?

LO has eczema, and we use vanicream twice a day as suggested by our allergist. If she scratches to the point of bleeding, watch out for infections. My LO does that with his ankles and we use a prescription antibacterial cream to heal those areas.

@locavore_mama: I think that's what I'm not liking about this ointment we have, it is SO thick I can barely squeeze it out of the tube. Hmm I assumed it was dry skin didn't occur it could be an allergy. It comes in a lot on her cheeks and the past few days I noticed on the back of her neck and then the back of her thigh she had really scratched herself up from itching.

@Bao: does she have allergies?
My nephew's skin is like that because of allergies. Anyway he uses Aquaphor at outbreaks.

I've been using cerave cream based off other bees suggestion for Los mild eczema. So far I'm really liking it. It's very thick but not oily or as thick as Aquaphor.

Our son just started getting dry skin patches on the backs of his arms. We've been putting Nivea creme on them right after a bath and it's mostly subsided. We also used some Triple Paste eczema cream (because DH bought it thinking it was diaper rash ointment).

I read that regular lotion doesn't work as well to clear up dry skin and using a thicker cream works better. If it doesn't go away, maybe get an appointment at the doctor to see if it needs a prescription?

ETA: pretty much everyone who makes a lotion, makes a cream/creme as well!
