Most companies by policy will not give you feedback on why you weren’t hired since that opens them up to potential lawsuits. But I totally feel you, I went through this same thing when I was trying to move back to my home state 4 yrs ago. Everyone wanted to interview me but no one made me an offer. I also felt that they must be trying to meet some kind of quota. I also felt very confident in my abilities and was regularly asked back for second interviews and even took many of those caliper tests. Eventually the only job I got was with a new department in my same company. It worked out for the best, but I still wonder what was going on behind the scenes at all those companies who were super jazzed about bringing me on then went totally silent.

I did get feedback from two companies that my salary was too high, which I believed, but was still frustrating since they knew my salary before asking me to interview. One opportunity at least another candidate had more experience and was willing to relocate in a year. I think what it really boils down to is whether or not you would fit into the culture/dynamic (which you have no control over) and if you understand the immediate needs of the hiring manager. This isn’t about you, it’s about them. When I landed my current job (that I started in March) THEY came after ME this time and since I wasn’t looking I was very relaxed and honest about my experience and skills. I think that really came off in the interview process and added to the desire to hire me. But I also really “got” what their needs were and was clearly able to fill the void immediately.

Sorry for the novel I hope it helps!!

@Truth Bombs and @pachamama: Good idea. I'm nervous to get the feedback but I need to suck it up.

@tinyperson: this is a great question! I got too nervous to try it today. ugh!

@gotkimchi: That is frustrating. I wish companies would be more upfront about their hiring process instead of stringing you along.

@Corduroy and @gestalt: Yes, I'm 100% decided on moving back. I've been putting down my mom's address to avoid being screened out by a comptuer, but I'm upfront with the recrutier when they call me. In most cases its an initial phone call with a recruiter, then the try to schedule an interview and I've been asking for video. I'm in tech so I'm surprised at a lot of these companies aren't used to doing video interviews. I travelled for one interview (and the promise of another the next day that didn't pan out). One school that I interviewed with wanted me to come in on short notice, but they agreed to do a Google Hangout instead. They couldn't get their tech to work so they just did it over the phone and I didn't get the offer. I just don't know how I can possibly get there any faster than 3 weeks.

@kiddosc: Thanks, it does super suck. I'm trying to emphasize that I am planning to move, just looking for the right position, and I am offerring to travel to the interview, but I haven't gotten many chances all the same.

@808love: Yes, I've got my LinkedIn profile with a nice photo and all updated. I've even been on Premium trying to reach hiring managers. I've also had referalls from former colleagues but nothing has panned out.

@Becky: I do tech support. I could be considered overqualified for some of the positions I'm applying for but I'm stuck in the middle between too experienced and not experienced enough for management roles. It's a tough time in my career to be interviewing.

What kind of positions are you applying for? We have hired people who we only did phone and video interviews with and also people who had to relocate, but we don’t like to hire people who are overqualified for some positions (it matters less for others). For some positions we want someone who knows the community well, and for others it doesn’t matter. Needing 3-4 weeks head time can be too long unless we are really desperate. The only other big turnoff (other than being a bad candidate) is when people haven’t researched our organization (or literally the only thing they’ve done is read our mission statement).

Do you have a digital footprint? (Besides Hellobee posts :silly: ).One that shows your record of success or a Linked in with your connections and reputation online. Do you avoid asking questions that are google-able and show you did some research on the company? Do you take a few notes if given important info? I would ask the question posted above about if they have any reservations. You will eventually find a good fit!! I did a bunch of interviews the summer before my first ‘real’ teaching job -which freaked me out- but I definitely ended up in a great place. I wish they had an ‘in action’ trial or group scenario component instead of individual interviews. It is so hard to tell how someone is just through an interview.

It really sucks, but the reality is probably that they're less likely to hire someone who needs to relocate. I know that with your personal situation it's really impossible for you to move before you've lined up another position. I'd try to work on better emphasizing that you could relocate quickly and are planning on making the move anyway. Maybe even go so far as to use your parents local address.

Are you serious about relocating to your home state? Have you stated when you are relocating to your home state? If there are local and comparable candidates, they may choose to go with them since they know the person can start within a couple of weeks.

If you were offered a job and they asked you to start in 2 weeks, would that be possible? Or would they have to wait a month for you to move? If you are able to start right when they need you, i would make this clear from the start. I would also consider lining up a bunch of interviews and flying out to attend in person.

@macintosh: So frustrating. How are you (or are you) communicating that you live far away but want to relocate? I know non-local candidates always give us pause. Are you asking for the phone interview arrangement or are they offering it as the first step?

I have asked for feedback after not getting a position, I think I asked if there was a way I could improve and was told they had no notes for me and they hired internally. So I actually think internal hires are very common because at my work all positions must be posted even though they almost always have an internal condidate chosen ahead of time

No real advice, but I have heard about a "magic question" on one of my working mom facebook groups: "Is there anything preventing you from hiring me for this position?" Worth a shot!

It forces them to think about it in the moment and allows you to address any issues that they come up with. It's also a memorable question that might make you stand out.

Aww man. the only thing I can think is asking those former interviewers about why they didn't hire you. I feel like it's more common these days to tell the candidate why they didn't get the job and they already said no so you might as well ask (even though it's sort of a tough question!)

It's hard for any of us to know for sure since we aren't seeing you in action. Did you feel comfortable enough with any of your former interviewers that you could reach out to them and ask for some constructive feedback on why you weren't selected?

Any HR/recruiter/job seeker insight appreciated! I’ve been applying and interviewing for jobs in my home state for a few months now. I’ve had quite a few interviews- phone, video, once in person - but zero job offers. I feel like I’m not being taken seriously as a candidate, but perhaps I’m filling some quota for an internal hiring process.

I feel confident with my job skills and my interview skills. I’m trying to understand why this keeps happening. Am I not on equal footing because I’m not there in person? Do I seem desperate? Gender bias? Bad luck?

In any case, I have yet another video interview tomorrow. How can I get these interviewers to take me seriously? I’m enthusiastic about the position, I’ll offer to meet them in person, but I’m honest that I need 3-4 weeks before I can start. I really want this one but I’m feeling defeated already.
