Firstly, I've never heard of this and it would definitely not be my cup of tea. Secondly, wouldn't it be difficult trying to hold/breast feed/change/do anything with the baby while also juggling the placenta?

@mrsjazz: I don't know why, but your comment made me laugh.

And no freaking way. You'd forever be known as the girl who carried her placenta around for ten days. I don't know if you can come back from that.

I've read a couple of birth stories with Lotus Birth. I'd only do it if someone was paying me.

@Arden: In the pictures on the NY Post article, it looks like most of the parents kept it in some sort of jar or bowl. It didn't look like there was anything there to mask the smell :(

A lot of the women I know who did lotus births wrapped their placentas in cloth with spices (ginger, cloves, etc) and it really didn't smell. It dried out fast, got hard before it had a chance to rot. I think if you kept it in a plastic bag or something it would be a totally different story (a stinky gross one).

It's not for me, but I don't think it's as disgusting as people assume.

@zippylef: I'll admit, I thought it was gross originally too. I don't think so anymore though. I could see such a marked difference (as could those around me) before I started taking them and after.
My bloating vanished the first day I took them, I had way more energy, my depression really lifted, and I felt much more capable of taking care of my baby (before I'd been scared and not wanting to be left alone with her).

One day I was really struggling (exhaustion, bursts of crying and feeling depressed, etc) and my husband asked if I'd taken my placenta pills and I realized I hadn't. Such a night and day difference.

@photojane: mmhmm... cuz even if it is only "musky", it's not what I wanna smell for 10 days. Blech. At a previous job, we kept the placenta in the fridge for 14 days and it never smelled pleasant.

Personally, not for me. I do think it could be done in a sanitary way, I just have no desire to do it.

Besides, why would I waste my precious placenta?! Encapsulating it helped my recovery immensely (physically and emotionally).

Nothankyou!! I'm sorta crunchy (natural birth/delayed clamping) but seriously there is nothing natural about carrying around your placenta for days. Most mammals chew the cord up to detach their young, that's what makes sense to me!

Have you read about this?! The headline reads, "Want to bond with your baby? Carry your placenta around for 10 days". I know lots of moms opt for delayed cord cutting, but apparently the new thing in the "natural birthing" world is not cutting the cord at all! I'm incredibly NOT crunchy, so this grosses me the F out. I mean, even the logistics are insane... carrying this floppy human organ in a bag around the house for days. Imagine feeding in the middle of the night with your placenta just chillin' next to you in bed. SO WEIRD.

What do y'all think?
