@Mrs.Someone: no reflux!

@catomd00: im glad to hear all the reassurances of nroaml healthy kids that were slow gainers. Do you think i should decrease solids even though I only give her 1-2 tbsp a day?

@Pollywog: She likes oatmeal mixed with BM, i do give her some, but im scared that mixed with the cereal, she will decrease her overall intake

thanks for the advice and reassurances everyone!

@Gin: it's hard not to fight for more, I always did, but just for an extra ounce maybe. It also worked best for us to eat more frequently, like every 2 hours or so during day time. My LO did have reflux...

My light eater ate about 19oz a day. Because of this we fortified it with extra calories (using formula but could also be rice cereal, just ask a doc so you use right amount). But also adding calories might cause even further of a drop. When you do offer foods, try higher cal options... My son is still only 27lbs at almost 4, but he's like his shorter peers in height and gains a couple pounds a year at this age.

Have you mixing bm with cereal? DS under eats at daycare/reverse cycles, but I can get 2 ounces of milk in him if it is in food

As long as she is gaining, even if it's slower I wouldnt worry much. It sounds like she knows how much she needs. At 6 months, I would cut back on solids of its interfering with milk intake though. Around 9 months, it would be less of a concern for me personally. Barring underlying medical issues though, I think you shouldn't stress about it. I don't really know how much DD1 drank a day outside of 12oz at daycare since we nursed the rest of the time, but her weight was a bit lower than those you posted above and neither I nor the Ped ever worried. She gained about 1lb a month her first year. At 1 year she was 19lbs and now she's perfectly healthy 2.5 year old and while I don't know what she weighs, she has definitely caught up!

Has she been evaluated for reflux? My son was diagnosed as "happy to be underfed" because it sometimes hurt him to eat. Getting him on Omeprezole helped a ton.

@Gin: I would say if your baby isn't interested, wait 15-20 minutes and try again. Then the feeding is over. I don't want to spend more than 45 total (including the 20 minute break) since that's how much a longish breastfeeding session would go.

@Gin: If she is settling into her own curve and she doesn't seem to be hungry then she is probably fine with 20oz. I'm glad you have looked at Kellymom, it is a good resource. Try not to worry

@hilsy85: this makes me feel a lot better! shes meeting her milestones. i'm also tiny (5'0 and 100lbs..hubs is avg 5'10" 170ish) so I shouldn't expect my DD to be tall/chubs but I can't help worry when all the babies around her are drinking 25+ oz... even the tiny babies!

@ms.line: i saw on kellymom that 20oz is the low end of normal, but in real life, i have never met a baby that takes in such low intake of milk. I've heard moms complain about growth spurts and babies taking 40oz... mine does 24-26oz on a growth spurt day. lol

@gingerbebe: did you stop fighting to get oz in him? Sometimes when she only drinks 1-2oz at a sitting, i keep offering every few minutes. I wonder if I should stop fighting so hard.

My first son was like this. They will cut back what they eat at 6 months because their growth rate slows down. Mine wouldn't take a sip over 24oz a day at that age and he barely ate more than a tablespoon or two of solids at a sitting! He then slowly decreased down his milk intake until he turned one. Like we were fighting to get 16-20oz in him at 9 months and he was barely at 12oz at 1 year. Ped said if he got water and took 8oz of milk a day and age cheese or yogurt it was fine. Suddenly at 18 months he decided he loved cows milk after being meh about it and now he goes through a gallon a week easily. He also tall and thin and just wiry. Very healthy though!

It sounds like she knows how much she wants to eat! 20oz of BM is still within the range of normal and it's perfectly healthy to be in the 15th percentile. If your ped isn't worried, I don't think you should be either!

@Gin: This sounds just like both my kids. My son dropped from 40th percentile at birth to around 15th percentile by 6/7 months. He stayed there until he was around 2.5 and now at almost 4 he's about 20th percentile. He has always been tall though. He's just a tall skinny kid, and was never really into eating--it was like he couldn't be bothered to nurse very long or take much in a bottle. My daughter is the same--she was 60th percentile at birth and at 9 months she was about 15th percentile. She also rarely drinks more than a 4oz bottle and is done nursing after just a few minutes usually. She is also not a huge solids eater. She is just a skinny baby also.

All this to say that our pedis were not at all concerned. They are both growing and meeting all milestones. Also, my DH and I are both taller and slimmer so it might just be genetics. What about you and your DH? and is your baby happy and meeting milestones? If so, I really would try not to worry!

ETA also want to add that around 6 months babies find their curve, which might not be where they started at birth.

@mrsbells: i brought it up to the pedi when she was 3 months and he wasn't too concerned, but we attempted adding a tsp of formula to her BM for about a week. She went from 20oz/day to ~17-18oz/day so we stopped. Not sure if it was from taste or if she just knows exactly how many calories she needs. i brought it up again her 4mo WCC and he wasnt too concerned since she was still gaining

@winniebee. this makes me feel a little better! DD doesn't have reflux. I do have excess lipase so im constantly tasting my milk when she doesnt drink. It makes me always second guess the quality of my breastmilk and I wonder if exclusively formula feeding would be less stressful

DS1 was like this. I exclusively pumped and then exclusively formula fed after 5 months -- I would say he took 20-22 oz a day as an infant and then probably around 6-9 months started taking 24 oz a day with solids. He had reflux and was on a PPI from 5-9 months and we gradually weaned from that. He was always 5th percent for weight and that was very stressful for me. But at age 4, he's completely healthy and still 5th percent. His eating habits have remained very similar - he is a grazer. Doesn't' eat much when he wakes first thing and then likes to eat slowly throughout the day.

While I think it's worth bringing up to your pediatrician, know that some babies just eat less and yours may be one of them.

@Gin: Definitely talk to the pediatrician, I would cut back on solids if its making her take less BM since the BM is the most important part of the diet now.

I have an almost 6 month old EBF baby girl whose weight has slowly fallen since birth. Around 3 months, she was only gaining about 2oz/week and also was refusing to take bottles. She started taking bottles when she went to daycare, but would refuse on Monday after nursing on weekends. I was constantly worried about her weight and if she got enough from the breast. She was jaundiced her first week of life and I had low supply so we supplemented the first 3 weeks of her life so I think I still have a little ptsd from those first weeks. Because of this, I decided to exclusively pump.

Now that I am exclusively pumping, I can see exactly how many oz she takes and its not a lot. She always takes in about 20oz a day. 22oz on a good day. I offer her at least 5, 4oz bottles a day (every 3 hours during the day). She usually leaves a little bit in her bottle. Her last bottle before bed may be between 4-6oz. I've tried feeding her closer to every 2 hours during the day (she refuses) and closer to every 4 hours. She mostly sleeps through the night. Her last feed is around 7pm and after not eating all night, will only drink 2-3oz at 7am! We've tried feeding her in the middle of the night, but she will only take in around 2oz, then her morning feed is a measly 1oz.

Now that we've started small amounts of solids, her intake has dropped even more. We offer her solids 1 or 2 times a day, about 1tbsp each time. Yesterday, she only drank 18-19oz! Should I be worried? Anyone else have a baby who doesnt drink?!

Birth weight 7lbz 3oz (52%)
6days old 6lbs 5oz (16%)
2 weeks 7lbs 0oz (21%)
1 month 8lbs 4oz (25%)
2 months 10lbs 5 oz (24%)
3 months 11lbz 4 oz (13%)
4 months 12lbs 10oz (17%)
5 months 13lbs 5oz (15%)
