With my 2nd and 3rd, I had weekly ultrasounds starting at around 30 weeks because of GD and AMA, respectively. My 2nd’s fluid progressively got less each week (they didn’t tell me numbers until the end but I knew from observing the measurements each week) and he was delivered early at 37 weeks because of it. The week before delivering fluid level was at 6, and doctor suggested I drink a gallon of water a day to see if would help. It didn’t and a week later, it was at 1.6. For my 3rd, it was fine until my 38 week check up where it was at 2.

It can all change really quickly and I agree that two weeks may be too long. It made me very paranoid. I asked the doctor, how would I have known about low fluid unless I was being monitored? She said decreased movement.

Thanks everyone! I think I'll definitely push for weekly checks when I see my regular OB this Wednesday. I feel like with all the ups and downs of this pregnancy I might as well be on the safe side, and the fact that the level has changed so much in the past few weeks seems like a not great sign. Hopefully it will just stay on the low side of normal, but I'm definitely going to try to be more prepared than I was when we got admitted a month ago!

@HappyBaker: I don't want to be an alarmist but I would ask for weekly checks. Because low fluid situations can change pretty quickly so 2 weeks feels like a long time to wait.
I also had low fluid but that was right at the end of my first pregnancy once i went past my due date.

I had low fluid starting around 32 weeks with lo1 and ended up being monitored weekly with nst/bpps. At 37 weeks my levels dropped again (I had gotten them up to normal) and they sent me to be induced right away. She was and is a perfectly healthy girl (now almost 4!)

I had low fluid ( I think a 6?) starting around 34 weeks, so a little later, but just had weekly BPP tests until 39 weeks when I scheduled a section. My level went up a little (highest was 12) and down and up over the four weeks but I just got so tired of worrying about it. It never got to the “we need to get baby out now” level but I pretty much went into every appointment expecting that. No cause was given. I drank so much water, it was good practice for staying hydrated while breastfeeding!

@HappyBaker: Given your history of a supposedly "false" positive and now decreased fluid, I would not be comfortable waiting 2 weeks to recheck. I would call your OB back and discuss what else can be done now to be sure you don't have a leak.

@erinbaderin: Thanks! Here's hoping that is what happens to me too! I see my regular OB Wednesday so I'm interested to hear her take on the whole thing.

@Shantuck: Ah thank you for responding again! I'll ask my OB about that Wednesday, it does seem really weird that it was supposedly a false positive but now 4 weeks later my fluid is way lower than it was.

I responded last month when you posted. I had a slow leak at the end of my pregnancy. I felt like I had too much fluid coming out but went to triage and was told that it was not amniotic fluid. My OB's office also swabbed and determined the same thing. Yet each time I had an ultrasound in the final weeks of my pregnancy I had less and less fluid and we then had to induce. With my situation, this was happening between 38 and 40 weeks, which is obviously a bit different, but the reason I share it is that it is possible to have a small leak that can go undetected. Given that you did test positive originally, I'd probably ask to be swabbed again.

I had low fluid at around the same time (or maybe a little later, 30 weeks?) - same situation, it was low but within the range of normal, but my OB flipped out and set me up for weekly ultrasounds and did all this talking about delivering immediately, and I was very stressed about it (my midwives were much more relaxed about it, interestingly). I doubled my water consumption and it went up - I had weekly ultrasounds for about 5 weeks and then they cut me loose.

This baby is seriously giving us a roller coaster ride of emotions! I posted about a month ago that I felt like I was "leaking", ended up being admitted because they thought my water had broken, but in the end it was all just said to be a semi rare false positive amniotic fluid test. My fluid levels were great and they decided I was NOT leaking.

Fast forward to today, I had a 28 week ultrasound because we are being monitored for a single artery cord, and the MFM said my fluid IS low now, still technically within the normal range but on the very low side of that, and not where she would like it to be. So I go back in 2 weeks to have it checked again.

Anyone have experience with this? Could this also just be a fluke-y thing that goes away? I've read I should probably up my water intake, though I feel like I am already drinking a ridiculous amount of water!
