@ParkerHaus - Thanks for sharing! I'm on Synthyroid, but I'm always happy to hear about more natural remedies. What is it that you like about the Armour Thyroid better?

I feel zero side effects (that I know about) from the synthyroid, but my levels seem to fluctuate every time I get a blood test (within range though), and we haven't yet had luck TTC. Seeing an acupuncturist and taking herbs though.

@Shutterbug: Yes, we did a lot of work on my progesterone levels and thyroid levels to get me pregnant. I was on 1 grain of Armour Thyroid (NOT synthroid) which is natural pig thyroid. I had previously been on synthroid and I really prefer the Armour- I had to get it with a prescription form my naturopath at a compounding pharmacy . To treat the low progesterone I used compounded progesterone cream (howevery unlike the one you linked this was prescribed and gotten from the compounding pharmacy) Ultimately we got my TSH levels to a 1 and my progesterone up in the 25-20 range during the luteal phase. The cycle I got pregnant I was also treating adrenal failure with acupuncture and taking Fertile Aid for women (and my husband was taking Fertile Aid for Med). Once I got pregnant I was on oral prometrium... I have to admit I didn't like it and am very happy to be off it now.

@adnama: It took us about a year of treating our low progesterone and low thyroid to get pregnant- It takes time to balance your hormone levels out. FWIW you might want to start treating your issues in advance.

ok thank you! i liked going to the natural doc - but everything was like take 249334 herbs, etc and so pricey! so I might have to go to a regular doc and see what they suggest.

@adnama: I've tried natural progesterone cream (this one: http://m.drugstore.com/emerita-pro-gest-natural-progesterone-cream/qxp144331) but I don't know how much it helped.

@Shutterbug: I found this thread and just have to comment. I went to a natrualpath today and she said she thinks I have low progesterone.. I have migraines/heavy flow/clots etc. I don't know my number, but I need to get this figured out before we TTC. Are you taking anything for progesterone? The stuff she recommended was $116 per month, so I don't want to take that if we are still a year out from TTC.

@ParkerHaus: hi! I know this thread is super old, and you're pregnant now (yay!) but I just got my 7dpo progesterone level tested and it was 3.1, and my TSH was 3.8. Were you able to get pregnant with the interventions you mentioned above, or did you end up having success in another way? I also have migraines - I had no idea it could be related.

Figured I would dig this post up for an update. At the end of Cycle 3 (first medicated cycle) my levels are now at:

Progesterone: 8.24 (dr wants at least 12)
LH: 4.5
FSH: 2.5
Estrogen: 344 (within normal, but a little high)
Luteal Phase: 13 days!
Thyroid: not tested this month- hope to test next cycle.

These levels aren't 100% accurate because they were taken 3 days early, my ND expects they would have been higher if taken at the right time.

Yay progress!

I am hypothyroid and take Synthroid., I was diagnosed about 3 months before I got pregnant. They did check my Progesterone levels, but those were ok. Because of my hypothyroid, I had my levels checked every 2-3 months and had frequent ultrasounds. They started off at once each month at the specialist (in addition to my regular OB) and then went to bi-weekly around 30 weeks, then weekly at 36 weeks. If they know you have a thyroid issue, conception and pregnancy can be managed with medication, you just have to stay on top of it. Dont stress too much over it =o)

@Seashell: Did you request a blood panel or did your OBGYN recommend it? Is it common to do a per-conception visit a year in advance?

@tidybee if you have symptoms you might talk with your dr. in 2002 they narrowed the normal range but some drs still use the old old range which goes up to 5. The new range is only up to 2.5 for normal. Also, some people's hypothyroid isn't detectable by blood work but can be identified by other means.

@Parkerhaus - thanks for the update! Sorry to hear you didn't ovulate this month though. It sounds like you're on the right track to treating the problems. I also have low progesterone - 4.5 midcycle, and the doctor put me on prometrium vaginal suppositories the past 2 months. It certainly helped with the spotting but didn't help me get pregnant.
I thought my thyroid would have been the issue because I also have low pre-O temps (96.7ish), and I've read that can be a symptom, but apparently my thyroid is okay.
Good luck...and certainly enjoy at least a glass of hoppy beer while you still can :)

Update: Got my test results back on Friday. My thyroid is just out of the normal range at a 2.61 (using the endocrinologists thyroid range) and my progesterone at the end of my cycle was 3.7 when it should have been in the 20s.

Talking with my naturopath we decided to treat both the hypothyroid and the progesterone (with progesterone cream) at the same time. We were tempted to just treat the thyroid to see if it brought my progesterone levels into the normal range but that could take months and well I think I might go crazy waiting.

As a side note, I also confirmed that I don't ovulate this month. I had an LH surge and almost 3 days later had my temp rise but I suspected that this cycle was anovulatory which it was. So from here on out I am getting blood draws on cycle day 25 to check my levels. As a plus, we will also get confirmation every month if I ovulated.

Fun fact: both low thyroid and low progesterone can be caused by estrogen dominance which also causes PMS and for many women (me included) migraines. Estrogen is a B!tch and bullys out other hormones/hampers thyroid function. I'm also realizing that I consume a fair amount of phytoestrogens, estrogens in food like soy. I almost cried yesterday when I realized that hops have crazy amounts of phytoestrogens. After a quick email with my dr she confirmed it. So all of the hoppy pacific northwest beer that I love is out for me (for the time being until I get my thyroid numbers under control). After my thyroid is under control I can have 1-2 glasses of hoppy beer a week :(.

@ParkerHaus I too had low progesterone with breakthrough brown bleeding. In order to conceive I had to take progesterone injections every other day for a few days after my big O. It was not difficult or painful. I did have to go the Dr. to have my hormone profile read to get my BFP since the progesterone will pop as a positive even if you aren't.

It's not horrible. Depending on how the pregnancy is established, your Dr. may keep you on progesterone creams, suppositories or injectibles after conception as well.

Well my doctor has me on prometrium (progesterone supplements) from O until 10DPO. Then I test at 16DPO if AF hasn't shown. However, I can't necessarily say that it's working. My first pregnancy ended in a MC and I'm currently spotting and it's not looking good for this one even though I've been on prometrium the whole time. I'm only taking them orally though, I know that there are vaginal suppositories that are an option and even shots I believe.

I've definitely known other people though who just take the supplements until the placenta produces the progesterone itself (around 10 weeks I believe) and have healthy pregnancies though so it's definitely not hopeless :)

Hi @ParkerHaus! So, I did a pre-conception visit almost a year ago and ran a thorough blood panel. My thyroid came back at 5.64 (I think?) and my doctor started me on Synthroid. She said she considered the number sub-clinicial, but since I was there as a "getting ready to be pregnant" patient, she wanted to treat it for the reasons you mentioned. It took about 6 months and an endocrinologist to get my number in the 1.5 range.

From what I have read, Low thyroid is associated with an increase miscarriage risk a well as risk for mental development issues. Low progesterone is associated withan insufficient build up of the uterine lining, in some cases preventing a fertilized egg from and also can cause miscarriages, so yeah, these levels being low presents challenges getting and maintaining a healthy pregnancy.
@running Elly can I ask what you have tried for low progesterone? I am curious how different treatments are working for others.

I'm sorry to hear that :( I do have low progesterone but as far as I know my thyroid hasn't been checked. I wasn't aware that they were connected, maybe that's something I should look into! I know that I have a few family members with pretty extensive histories of thyroid issues. It's really good that you are aware of those things early though so that you and your naturopath can find something to at least move them in the right direction!

Apologies if this ends up being a book. I had a feeling something wasn't right with me when we started to TTC. Hubs dismissed it as me being paranoid, but I had a feeling that things wouldn't go quickly for us. After re-reading TCOYF and actually paying attention to the TTC parts I realized that I had symptoms of low progesterone and tha I had for YEARS. I seriously thought that spotting (my own little early warning system) before my period was normal, as were the horrible cramps, super heavy periods, and large clots. Apparently those things aren't normal. I didn't freak out but I did make an appointment with a Naturopath. She aggreed with my assessment and ordered labs. I should have been prepared for the results- as I suspected them myself but I was knocked on my emotional ass when i got them back. Yes my progesterone levels are low (1.71 at mid cycle when I should be at 4.4-28 at mid cycle) but what I didn't expect was my thyroid levels being out of whack. I have a 3.4 TCH level when .5-2.5 are normal. I know that progesterone and thyroid can be linked, so i shouldn't freak out but I am. about 8-10 years ago I was diagnosed as hyper thyroid- needed meds to function and then after 3 years mysteriously didn't need my meds anymore. I've had my thyroid tested every year since and it has come back normal. There are a whole host of pregnancy complications with low thyroid and I am having a hard time with this.

So my question- anyone else out there had progesterone issues and thyroid issues? I am just trying to wrap my head around what this means for our TTC journey.
