DS is the king of powernaps! He can nap for 15 minutes and you would have thought he napped for hours based on his demeanor!! This is kind of a good and bad thing for us.

Yes! Mine too! Never seems to meet the recommended since she was a newborn! I've only recently been able to get more consistent 1hr naps (but still this weekend we dealt with 3 - 30 min naps). 12hrs at night is a dream once in a blue moon. The ped even finally conceded at our 9 month appt. that she might be one of the ones that just doesn't need that much sleep.

Me too, me too! CJ is 7 months and sleeps about 11 hours a night If we're lucky she'll sleep for 90 minutes (two 45 minute naps) at daycare. Usually it's less than that. Today we were at home and she took a 15 minute nap and a 40 minute nap, passed out on top of me, so I wasn't getting anything done during those "breaks." I think she just doesn't want to miss anything! I've decided this is just the way she is - she's not going to be a big napper. Or maybe she'll surprise me as she gets older and she'll take one of those 2 hour naps that people talk about. :)

@sslm: That may be your problem. We can often direct the time and location of their sleep, but the overall duration is up to them. I have found that embracing the idea that she has a radically different than I do to be really helpful. Also, embracing the suck. Whenever someone tells me about their toddler who naps for 3 hours and then sleeps for 12 hours overnight? I die a little inside.

R only gets about 10.5 hours at night, doc wants her to have 12. Then she wants her to have 3 hours during the day, usually she gets 1.5 at the most at day care. They say she is fine all day, happy and playing.

I think around 9 months is when she started napping longer at home.

LO has recently decided naps are for suckers too. She's perfectly pleasant all day long, and also doesn't go to bed until 1030, no matter what method we try to get her down earlier. So, 7am-1030 is a long shift for this mom.

Holla! My daughter is one of these. Her father is the same way, so we weren't shocked. Sleeps 11 to 12 hours total, always has. It's pretty beneficial to my husband, as an adult. But as her mother? Ugh! No advice. You really can't change the amount of sleep a child needs.

He's 2 now and has been on one nap since he was around 16 months and frequently drops naps all together.
He sleeps 11 hours max overnight.

We've gone through phases like that too! I don't know what to say, I have always found it easier to just keep going about our day than struggle with her to make her sleep. If she was cranky then of course I would try again and/or resort to a car nap.

my LO is an 11-11.5 hour a night sleeper and she gets 1.5-2 hours of naps each day, sometimes less, and she is generally pretty happy. she is 15 months but has been this way since around 8 months or so. i would stress myself out about how she wasn't getting 15 hours like she was supposed to, but she has always been content and i figure she just doesn't need a lot of sleep.

@scg00387: I have a hard time believing that these magical unicorn super sleepy babies exist for real.

@sslm: as a newborn, my LO always got way less than the recommended amount of sleep and since then he's fluctuated a lot. He binges and purges on a weekly basis and it all evens out to being pretty average. It's hard not to worry and stress about the numbers because it always feels like the moms with the dream sleepers are the most precise (and vocal) with their numbers  .

@sslm: I used to feel the same way. DS NEVER has fit the guidelines in terms of sleep. And then a friend told me that babies need sleep to grow. So in the beginning that freaked me out! Well DS proves that babies grow without tons of sleep - he's been 90%+ since birth.

As long as he's healthy and happy, he must be getting what he needs!

My LO's sleep got signficantly better after 12m. He transitioned to one nap around 10.5 months with a rocky start and it slowly lengthened. Now he gets about 11 hours over night and typically a 2 hour nap. Which is more sleep per 24 hours than he has had in a long time! Like yours, he was always happy even with less sleep. I'm the same way - it doesn't make it any easier when some LOs sleep 12+ overnight and take 4 hours of nap a day :silly:

Yep. DS is 13 month. He sleeps 12ish hours per night. I'm lucky if I get one 1 hour nap. Usually it's more like 45 mins. I'm jealous of everyone who has a toddler that naps for 2 hours! Also for about 2 weeks he totally refused to nap at all. It was hell. So now I take what I can get.

Yep! G gets a max of 11 hours at night, and about 1.5 hours worth of naps total at daycare. On the weekend I can get more sleep out of her (but that's only if we cosleep for naps, which means I'm stuck there with her). She's a super happy kid, and just doesn't seem to need much sleep. I, on the other hand, am flipping exhausted :p

My first LO always took 30 minute naps and was a happy kiddo. His naps got longer only when we transitioned to one nap at 14 months. That said, with my second I have been more strict/scheduled because *I* need the breaks during the day to get some things done, and he has been a better napper. A couple things that help: getting out of the house first thing in the morning so he gets a lot of stimulation (then goes down for a nap appx. 2.5 hours after waking up). Second is making sure he gets physically tired enough- so encouraging him to crawl back and forth, letting him go up the stairs with me behind him of course etc. BTW little on is 11 months, if that helps.
