@zippylef: I tasted it out of curiosity, but I really should've just let it remain a mystery. The smell is bad enough. Ha

@blackbird: I've never worried about the sugar. Sadie is very healthy. She's right on track for her weight & growth. I figure the sugar's in there for a reason, and the formula has to pass tons of guidelines and standards. I've noticed the gentle is a little more expensive ($21 instead of $19 for the regular), but to me it's worth it. I can lay her right down for playtime after feeding & never worry about spit up. If we're out & about I don't burp her, and she does just fine.

I definitely want to try a generic. Parents Choice (regular) was actually listed as the most sugar! So I was definitely wondering if the gentle kinds with less sugar (or "partially digested" proteins) might be ideal. She hasn't spit up too much yet, but she's only 10 days old. Only if she doesn't get a good burp in.

Formula smells so bad, I can't imagine tasting it!

@blackbird: I was going to say exactly what @zippylef said! Nothing is enhancing the taste - it's nasty! We used Enfamil Gentlease pretty much from the start, because we had a sample. We tried the Similac Advance sample too when the Gentlease ran out, and while she took t fine, she did have a little spit up (which is normal). She's had zero spit ups on the gentle formula though! We just got the courage to try the generic brand of Gentlease from Walmart & we love it. I like it even more than the Enfamil & it's way cheaper. I def recommend at least trying the generic!

ETA: I went on the Parent's Choice (Walmart brand) website to see wht kind of sugar, and this is what it said...

"Our Gentle formula also contains ¼ the lactose, a carbohydrate naturally found in cow's milk, which is in a standard milk formula. With Gentle®, your baby will still get the recommended protein source, cow’s milk, while benefiting from a formula specially designed to address fussiness or gas."

So, basically the lactose is the protein source.

@blackbird: Believe me, having had to take a sip of C's formula at the airport.... there is nothing there to enhance flavor. It's disgusting and not sweet in the slightest. We did Gerber Gentle too, actually.

I don't know.. I just went with what LO tolerated, which was gerber good start gentle. There's no generic/store brand for it though.

Well I know some sugar is required to digest the milk proteins in it...I just wonder if some of them are made overly sweet to enhance flavor and if one sugar is truly better than the other.

I feel like changing formula may be tempting fate but if it works the same, it could be a huge cost savings. The contents look identical

I always thought the sugar was just part of the carb complex, because breastmilk is naturally quite sweet too.

The sensitive formulas, at least the similac kind I've looked at, actually has corn syrup solids or something like that as a main ingredient. I think it's a partial digestion thing so it's easier for a troubled stomach to digest? So since my kids didn't have any adverse reaction to the regular kind, we stuck with the regular formula since it was primarily milk based sugars. I've read that the regular is advised unless LO has an issue.

We use Similac Advance but the tub says lactose is the sugar rather than sucrose. And it has 10.71 grams of carbs per 5 oz. So I don't think that's entirely sugar.

We tried the kirkland brand, but it made my kids spit up more, so we stick with similac.

We have been supplementing with Similac Advantage and have one can. We are wondering what to look for (we will ask her ped Monday). I dislike that formulas have so much sugar. I know there's sucrose and lactose. An article said Similac Advantage had some of the lowest sugar but it was sucrose (3.5 grams or so), whereas some lactose brands had 12.5 grams or so.

So what's the deal with sugar?

Is it advisable to use a sensitive version even if your Lo shows no signs of needing it yet (preventive? Or is it ideal to use the regular kind?)

Has anyone used the SAMs Club formula instead of Sinilac and done Ok on it?

I'm really not sure what to use yet!
