Almost 30 weeks here and I fluctuate 1-3 lbs from my starting weight. At the OB's, I didn't gain anything from week 26 to week 28. Special case with me though - I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes from week 8/9 (retook the glucose test at week 25 and "passed" so I was essentially misdiagnosed, but that's a different story), so I was following a GD diet plan and it really kept the weight gain in check.

As long as the doctor has no problem with it and your baby is growing fine, you shouldn't worry. :)

I'm also a 'textbook' weight gain preggo myself and I get comments on both sides of the scale constantly. One day someone will ask if I'm having twins then the next I'll be told that I barely look pregnant. So honestly you can't win - as long as your Dr. says you're fine, then I wouldn't worry.

And I have friend who started her pregnancy obese adn the Dr. actually told her not to gain any weight at all. I don't even know how that's possible since you'd basically have to start dieting then keep it going throughout your entire pregnancy, but at least it's comforting to know that some peopel aren't supposed to gain anything!

totally agree with @Foodnerd81: ppl have no idea what they're talking about, i gained 38 lbs!!!! but because i carried small throughout pregnancy, no one believed how much i gained or how far along i was.

i wouldn't worry as long as your mw is good with your and baby's progress!

I am NOT having a low weight gain situation (up close to 40 at 36 weeks, and had gained at least 20 at 26.5 weeks), but I got these comments ALL the time until maybe two or three weeks ago. So just chiming in to say that people always have something to say about your size. Everyone is different, and most people don't know what an average pregnant woman at a given point should even look like. If your doctors are satisfied I wouldn't worry. I'm a little jealous!

@redsmarties: Gahhhh! Me too! I'm still down 2 lbs pre-preggo at 24 weeks and it had me worried (even though, like you, I'm overweight and dr says it's fine). Thanks for being brave enough to post this!

@redsmarties: As long as your doctor is ok with it, it's fine. I gained my first official pound this week, but because I was a little bit of a chunky monkey to begin with, my doctor had put me in the 0-15 pound range for weight gain anyway.

1- wahoo! That's actually great because it is so difficult to loose weight after baby. Less you gain, the better (within reason...and your midwife is the boss).

2- honesty, my OB told me you really only need 300cals a day and that I was allowe to full on workout (no weights) during my whole pregnancy. She said if I gained at the least 15lbs I would be good.

My weight gain was weird. Overall I gained 19 lbs, but started out my pregnancy by losing 15 (so I only ended up 4 lbs over my pre-pregnancy weight). My midwife only got concerned towards the last month, and then only just barely, since I was still measuring perfectly. E ended up being 8lb 12oz, and my midwife said we were a textbook case of the baby taking exactly the nutrients he needs.

Honestly, though, I really think the only person who should be allowed to vocalize any concern is your doctor, and everyone else should just mind their business. Fantasy world, though, lol.

I haven't dealt with low weight gain-- actually, every appointment so far I'm like textbook, having gained exactly what the books say I should within 1 pound, which is weird. BUT, I was getting so many comments when I hit about the 6 month mark-- oh you are so small, you barely look pregnant-- shy of actually concerned, but it happened enough that I was like, SHOULD I have gained more weight? Fast forward 2 weeks and now I keep getting comments like, "Not long now, huh?" You can't win. My gain has been pretty steady, though of course in the 3rd trimester it comes on faster.

So yeah-- in short, people have no idea. Even people who have had babies. If your midwife says you are fine, you are fine and good for you :)

@redsmarties: I'm a little over 25w and up 13lbs (which I think is about average?) and I still get the "you're so tiny!" and "are you sure you're that far along?" comments all the time. I guess people just carry weight differently. It's so odd, too, because I always assumed I'd be a huge preggo that everyone thought was having twins! I think as long as your midwife isn't worried then you're fine!

I'll also take a prescription for Haagen Dazs, @scg00387. Any day.

At 20 weeks pregnant I had lost 4 pounds! On the day I delivered I was only 18 pounds above my pre pregnancy weight. I got asked all the time why I wasn't bigger. I even had a client ask me if I was "sure" how far along I was!! But my baby girl was 6lbs 7 ounces and perfectly healthy!!

I only gained 11 pounds the whole pregnancy. N was 8 pounds 3 ounces. I was overweight when I got pregnant so my doctor monitored N's growth and he was fine.

Eta: I lost 30 pounds to start with and only gained 11 back. So still under pre-pregnancy weight. DH pointed out my error.

I had hyperemesis gravidarum with both of my pregnancies and struggled with low weight gain. Both of my kids were born healthy and totally normal. :) For most women, weight gain is not an accurate judgement of a healthy pregnancy, so as long as everything else looks good, there's nothing to worry about.

I wouldn't worry too much. My pre-pregnancy weight was average/on target, and I was only up about 10 pounds by 26 weeks. I'm now 31 weeks and am up almost 14 pounds. I gain, then loose, gain, then loose again. My OB is not worried, because my belly/uterus is measuring fine.

i'm at 21/22 weeks and have gained 5 so far. with my first LO i gained a LOT more by now -- maybe 15 or so?

BUT, i started off LO#1's pregnancy relatively fit, while i started this pregnancy 10lbs heavier than with the first. i think that is a big reason, as well as i'm more active now chasing my one year old :). i wouldn't worry at all! :) i think you are on your way to a healthy pregnancy and hopefully be able to shed the pregnancy lbs quickly afterwards! :)

I am hesitant to post this, because I know that I may a) just be worrying too much, and b) come across as a little braggy. I promise, I'm really just curious.

I'm 26.5 weeks pregnant, and I've only gained 6 pounds so far. The midwife is not worried - my belly/uterus is measuring on target, and I was a bit overweight to begin with.

That being said, I'm getting a LOT of comments from people wondering why I'm not bigger (gee thanks), and when my pregnancy apps/emails update, they all say things like "You should have gained around 16-20 pounds by now..." etc.

Does anyone else have a story like this? Did you gain small amounts of weight but end up okay? Did the weight pack on in the last trimester? Should I just stop worrying, and trust that everything is going okay?

Thanks!
