Toddlers LIE; they do. My LO lies about all sorts of stuff: pooping, whether she has eaten food on her plate that I can see she hasn't eaten, what she had for lunch, etc. people who think/say that little kids don't lie haven't spent much time around kids. They're pants are on fire.

I would also think that's just being silly and trying to make you laugh.

I don't think that is lying... I think he is trying to get the initial laugh again. My 14 month old already repeats behaviors that got laughs previously!

Thank you everyone for your inputs! :) DH is usually not very concerned about developmental stuff and thinks he's normally being normal. So when he actually talked to me about this is what made me write about this. I will definitely relay this to him to ease his concerns about this. I will still definitely tease him about overacting about this but I'm glad to have you guys give me your inputs! Thank you again. :)

Yeah, just sounds like a joke to me. And it's probably best to treat it that way. It'll get old fast. Acknowledge you know what the truth is, say "you're being silly," and move on. If it turns into "lying" about bigger things, then state what the truth really is and move on quickly. The less attention, the less often she'll do it.This works with older kids, too (I used this as a strategy when I was a behavior specialist--it's a way to let kids "off the hook" for small things you don't want to escalate. Other times, of course, I needed them to own up to the truth.)

I used to be a preschool teacher. One day I was subbing for a toddler teacher, and putting them down for nap time. One of the older kids said "Miss N reads us a book before nap." So I looked at one of the younger kids (who was 22 months) and said "Does she really read you a book before nap?" And the little girl thought for a few seconds, smiled big, and said YES!
They were both lying. Silly Miss BNM. Totally developmentally appropriate!

@Meowkers: OoooOO I'll take it! Thank you. :) He does pause before he decides to say 3 instead of 2, I think he's thinking about it, when he says just 2 it's normally right away.

That just sounds like silliness to me, not really lying.

Also I read a study that said that lying during childhood is an indication of high intelligence and critical thinking skills. :-)

My almost 3yo does similar things, most of the time I think he is joking. He's a very unreliable conveyor of information in general though, I'm not sure if it counts as actual "lying"...

I'm hesitate to even ask this because I'm not sure if 2 years old can lie, but my husband seems a little concerned and I'm not sure what to do so here goes.

We quiz LO a lot for fun. One of our questions to him is "How old are you?" and he normally answers with 2.

Last week he accidentally said 3. I guess we giggled a bit and said no no that's the wrong answer and asked again and he still said 3 but also giggled right after he said it.

So now half the time we ask him "How old are you?" he answers 2 and the other half he pauses for a while and then answers 3 and laughs his head off. It's very silly. We don't giggle when he gets it wrong just that first time but he almost right away laughs at himself that maybe I might smile at that but I try really hard to not encourage him.

Honestly I don't think it's all that bad because he's 2 but DH is not happy about this.

Anyways should I be concerned about this and if so how do I stop him from doing this?
