I agree with the idea that she's not really "lying" in the more adult sense of the word. Toddlers are always playing the game - they want to see how far they can go to get what they want! I'd just acknowledge what she wants and stay firm to the original plan: "I can see that you didn't poop. I know you want to go upstairs, but we're not going to do that right now."

C lies about if she pooped sometimes- if I ask if she pooped and she wants to keep playing she says no. But I can tell anyway, she can't trick me. :)

She also frequently says something that is red is yellow, then I say, no what color is that? And she always says red. So I think she is trying to joke? She smiles so that's my theory.

@hilsy85: haha, that's pretty funny! I guess I could see that lying involves some level of reasoning or something. That makes sense though - I try not to give in, but I also kinda think she's being a little playful sometimes and don't want to be mean about it. But I hate being manipulated!

Ehh my LO has also told "lies" since that age. I think they have a hard time distinguishing between what is true and what they want to be true (because that will lead to a desired action). I would just try not to give into the "manipulation"--if you know she didn't poop before bed, just say, there's no poop in your diaper, goodnight and that's that. That's what we do anyway :) I have also heard that early lying is a sign of intelligence! :silly:

So my 16 month old has recently started lying to us. If we tell her we don't want to go upstairs at the moment, she tells us she pooped so we agree to go up there. If we try to put her to sleep before she's ready, she tells us she pooped or that she's hungry (neither of which are true). Stuff like that.

Anyway, just wondering what your strategy is for these little lies. How do I discourage her from doing it? She's still pretty young so i'm not sure what works at this age, but I don't want her to become a big fat liar!!
