@aprk: I'd just de-stash and get what you like! I know lots of mommas that would love the BG! Tbh, we didn't even try them (went with Sunbaby pockets that have been awesome) and are re-building a stash of wahm fitteds right now ( I seriously LOVE them!)

I really dislike our Grovias and I love our BGs! I think CDs are all trial and error and there is no shame in selling your diapers!

I currently use prefolds and Thirsties covers for my newborn.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I know you didn't ask me, but my favorites are BG, Rumparoos and Ragababe.

We didn't use newborns with DS (started cloth full time at 3 weeks when his umbilical stump fell off), but if you are going with pocket diapers I would suggest Rumparoos since they have a 4th row of rise snaps you can make the diapers super small and they will fit most babies from birth plus they will grow with the baby...we could have easily used ours with DS. They do make NB specific diapers, but I think one of the benefits of cloth is the cost savings and getting a stash of diapers that only works for such a short period sort of defeats the savings for me. That said we may do a rental or flats and covers with this baby for the NB phase but I do have a RaR stash that will also work.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: We didn't do newborn.

I still vary on my favorite depending on the day.

I love the Thirsties Duo Diaper inserts. The shells are ok, the dont hold up great.

I love the Organic prefolds from BG/Flip. We use this for stuffing our pockets or using with covers.

I like my GroVia but if you are using them just as a cover with a prefold, I think there are much more cheaper covers.

@aprk: They do take a while, but unless it's late spring or summer we throw them in the dryer. And we have enough that we can wash every other day with a few left over. And older babies don't go through diapers as quickly.

@aprk: prefolds was my sleep deprived fault! I read fitted earlier and my brain said prefold :). But seriously if you loved your NB fitted rental and are loving the Gro Via's go with that. It's so trial and error and OMG super cute fitted diapers out there!! You can go coverless around the house so nothing but natural touching the bum and lots of breathability for LO :)

@anbanan15: thanks for the thorough response! I've never actually used prefolds, so I have no idea why that's even a plus. My 2 am sleep deprived brain is weird I guess, haha. You make a good point about trying them on top of the BGs though. I've never used the organic ones long enough to see a difference since we have such a mix. We do have seven of them though so I could probably do it for one day.

@aprk: if your BG are in good condition and you want to move on, sell them. The resale value is crazy good. I'm a member of a bg buy/sell/trade page and most diapers sell for 90%ish of original value, obviously you'd have to pay shipping so you'd lose some $ there but not a whole lot.

FWIW, we don't like our BG 4.0s much either. I know lots of people love them, but I don't like the microfiber, and I do think she was quite sensitive to it when she was younger. We've had much better luck with our Elementals (we use them almost exclusively) and other cotton diapers.

@aprk: haha okay! Not an idiot at all! After I asked where it was touching I thought I bet she means the suedecloth!!! It could be possible....the suedecloth is polyester so synthetic, which some LO's have trouble with and honestly even if you did a TON of research there would have been no way of knowing so DO NOT beat yourself up about it. The mesh in the Gro Via is also polyester, but if you are using the sposie insert or the natural fabric snap in insert (they have both a hemp blend and organic cotton version) the amount of polyester against the skin would be minimal or non-existent. BTW, since you seemed to like the prefolds you can certainly use them inside the Gro Via shell! You don't have to use their inserts.

You said you have some of the organic cotton lined BG AIO's? have you noticed a difference when he wears them? If you feel he is sensitive you can certainly sell your stash and I'm sure it would go quick and for a good price given the condition/age of the BG's.

ETA: you can also add a prefolds ON TOP of the suedecloth on your BG instead of stuffing the pockets with the microfiber (which should never touch babies skin)...if you have extra prefolds around (or get some since they are cheap) it would be a good way to "test" out the theory that the suedecloth is bothering LO without having to make another investment first. And for what is is worth DS is super sensitive and we could only use water to wash his bum, but we never had an issue with the material the diapers were made from against his skin and we have several different inners.

Ok, just going to retype a few things to consider before you jump to GroVia. I love my GroVias but there are some downsides. I would hate for you to make another investment and then realize more issues.

1. Grovia has back elastic as well. As my daughter is older (and a big belly) I think it might actually dig in more than the BG.
2. Personally, I dont love h&L or velco. The Grovia is the nice H&L but it gets really dirty and not super sticky.
3. I stuff my BG with my organic prefolds and I like the way the pockets (BG4.0) or my one flip cover holds the prefold better then how the GroVia holds the prefold.
4. GroVias are harder to add extra absorbancy to if you are using them snap in soakers. There is an extra "booster" you can put in but it adds bulk and honestly still doesn't always do the trick.
5. This is gross, but because of the wide flat shape of the BG, cleaning poo off of them is easier then the curviness of the GroVia. Its what makes the Grovia trimmer though.
6. Because the GroVia snap in soakers have PUL/TPU (I never remember the difference), I still haven't really figured out how to "strip" them. I can boil my prefolds or other inserts but not sure what to do about those.

There has been some concerns with moms that the fabric in the BG pockets can cause a rash on LOs. personally I don't think it stays that dry which causes the issue. We use disposable liners which helps.

If you have any other questions, tag me and I'll pop back over to the thread.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I personally washed my shells every time especially since the Gro Via shell has the mesh inner and not a wipeable inner, but I still would have washed them each time though...Ragababe also lines their inner shells with fabric and I prefer to wash them each time...I don't like a PUL/TPU against the skin shell either like Flips..maybe I am picky? If you are using them as instructed that amount would probably be fine. I did see people seem to feel the Gro Via shells last longer than other TPU diapers because of the mesh lining is "protecting" the laminate from delimitation. However, in general TPU is recommended to last 80-100 washes!

ETA: I personally like a few extra diapers in case laundry doesn't get done or stuffed (mostly use pockets) so I would probably get slightly more than 12 shells if I was using a system like Gro Via full time and reusing the shells just to be safe. I would rather too many than not enough.

@anbanan15: I did a quick search on the Gro Via Hybrid site. Gro Via recommends 12 shells and twice as many liners. If you can snap the liners in and out of the shells how often would the shells actually get washed? Do you think a person should purpose more than 12 to extend the life of the diapers since the TPU/ PUL is applied differently than BG? BG stashes are usually 18-24 because the entire diaper gets washed each time, right?

I have used both as well and like both. BG are still my favorite diaper hands down and I tried many brands.

The Gro Via still has PUL on it so I'm not sure why you would think the PUL on the BG is bad? Gro Via (and Rumparoos) use TPU which is essentially the same thing as PUL except how the inner laminated layer is applied to the polyester backing is done differently, which is why they feel slightly different. PUL used in most diapers is solvent bonded while TPU is heat bonded. The actual laminate on both products is exactly the same, just the process of applying it is different. Also there are some that find TPU does not last as many washes as regular solvent bound PUL just because of the nature of heat bonding and exposing the product to repeated heat (which you want in your wash cycle).

While I was pregnant I did a bunch of reading on cloth diapers - enough to be confident that I wanted to try it, but not enough (apparently) to investigate all the different brand options out there.

On the recommendation of several blogs I read, we bought BumGenius diapers. We were super excited about them, and got some of each type (pocket, AIO both organic and non, hook/loop and snaps). Once A arrived and grew out of his newborn diapers (fitteds that we had rented - AWESOME), we loved the BGs. They were cute and did the job just fine.

But then, we had to go out of town and stay in a hotel for several days. We did some more talking to folks and chose GroVia hybrid shells with disposable liners for our time away from home. And we can snap in cloth inserts for regular use. HOLY CRAP THEY ARE SO AWESOME. I loved the feel of the GroVia shells, and the fit was awesome. Not crazy bulky either.

Then, I started to realize some things.

The BG diapers have elastic in the back to get a snug fit, which is great, but since A is still young and small, it really digs into his back. Doesn't seem to both him but leaves some red marks. I was ok with it until I saw that the GroVias didn't bug his skin at all.

He had been having some minor diaper rash which we we thought we had under control. Two days in the GroVia shells + liners and it was totally gone! I though OMG is he sensitive to the fabric of the BG diapers?? I had never considered that! In reality, I'm guessing that the disposable liners just did a better job of absorbing away from the skin, BUT the GroVia shells do seem much more breathable.

So now, we are back home and he is in BG diapers. I know they are fine, and highly recommended diapers, and we probably wouldn't have considered getting rid of them had we not experienced something else, but now I have a mental block against them since we had such a good experience with the GroVias. The elastic is pissing me off, and I'm paranoid that the PUL is not good for his skin.

Now I want to completely switch our stash. I'm probably being a bit hasty, but UGH. I am so mad at myself for not trying more brands before we stocked up one type.

ETA: plus the GroVias don't need to be stuffed! And you can use pre folds in them (cheaper!) Aaah, I am obsessing!
