We have been getting High Five for 3 years now - my DS LOVES them! They have stories, songs, Spanish, seek and find, find the silly things and a recipe in each book!

To report back: We like NatGeo Little Kids. It has a few elements in it that are probably of more interest to children older than 2-3yo, but it's solid and I'm happy with my purchase. LO has taken to "reading" on his own lately, and when the magazine shows up, he'll take it and flip through it, examining the pictures. I call that a success!

We get High Five, which is part of the Highlights family, and used to get Ladybug. Both are great for reading aloud!

@Honeybear; thanks! I think I'll check it out at the library (if I can) before we commit. The photographs are just excellent, aren't they?

@Monkula: I briefly looked at NatGeo Little Kids in the library. It looked a bit like some topical books we have from them, so when it went on sale on a flash sale site, I got a subscription. It hasn't come yet, but it should be here in a week or two.

Here's the NGLK website, it looks like the magazine is similar to the books (below is the Amazon link to a book we have): http://kids.nationalgeographic.com/kids/littlekids/.

http://www.amazon.com/National-Geographic-Readers-Melissa-Stewart/dp/1426306520/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1364589173&sr=8-1&keywords=national+geographic+dolphins

The books are definitely geared toward elementary students, but LO likes the pictures, which are up to NG standards.

We like BabyBug. It has a nice mix of illustration types, songs, finger plays, rhymes, and stories. Lowly is a medium-ish book hater (booo! hiss! I'm not sure if we're even related!) and it is one that she actually enjoys. She likes so few books that we test ones out from the library and then pretty much immediately buy them if she doesn't try to escape at story time. What is the Nat'l Geo Kids like? They used to have an Animal Babies one we found at the library and she loves the photographs and search-and-finds, but it seemed like maybe the new incarnation was geared towards older kids...

@umlo: My LO is 2.5 years old. We just subscribed to NatGeo Little Kids. It hasn't come yet, so I'm not sure if it's good, but we like those $4 "books" they put out on topics like dolphins and turtles, so hopefully it will be a lot like those!

How old are your children? I loved Cricket as a child, and they have a couple other titles for different age groups. LadyBug is aimed at younger children and there's even one for babies. BabyBug is kind of cute--we check it out from the library once and a while. It's like a board book.
