My MFM had me take it for my BH/preterm labor (I was also on nifedipine). He basically said "it can't hurt and might help", so I took it sometimes. I don't think it helped that much, but it did help some with leg cramps and constipation.

@IRunForFun: wow I didn't even think of that, my contractions before being put on the drip were basically non-existant, 24 hrs after water breaking :/

@FannyMae: I think the reason doctors ask you to stop toward the end of pregnancy is it calms muscle contractions so it can make uterine contractions weaker/less effective than they normally would be. Mine didn't have a problem with me continuing though.

I did! I took the Natural Vitality powdered stuff you mix into water. They have unflavored or some that taste good!! It did help my BH's, the only thing was I already have super low blood pressure, and magnesium can have a pressure lowering effect, so if I did it in the morning I'd get a bit lightheaded. Also, it does make you poop! Epsom salt baths helped too. I had an irritable uterus with sooooo many BH's starting as early as 16 weeks.

@yoursilverlining: the container says swisse magnesium from magnesium citrate 150mg. that doesn't sound like much though does it? if I take it consistently I find that my neck muscles are not as tense and knotted. mine are pretty bad, I have hunchy shoulders and my neck is always out of whack.

@Pumuckl: that is really interesting! my OB didn't tell me to stop taking it at the end of the pregnancy, I wonder if I should have!

I took magnesium with all three of my pregnancies and it definitely helped with crampiness. My docs wanted me off it by 36 weeks though in order for the uterus to prepare for birth.

I had better luck with a liquid cal-mag (Country Life brand). It totally helped with sleep, pains, and digestion. I decided to do cal-mag after realizing straight magnesium made me poop all of the time. ;)

@lamariniere: I think that there are different types of magnesium that are either going to give you the poops all the time, or that are just okay  The one I took when pregnant was pretty strong, and I had to take it every other day just to calm down by tummy. I currently take Swisse Magnesium, which is Magnesium Citrate, and its all good. Actually, I find when I take it, the knots in my neck and shoulder muscles are not as tense.

I had luck with taking Epsom salt baths. I took them nightly before bed and if I skipped the Charlie horses would return. However, on the nights I took one I had no pain whatsoever.

I took magnesium for leg cramps and also migraines, and I still take it now 15 months post partum. It worked wonders on the leg cramps, and I have only have maybe one or two migraines since then.

the only thing is... it makes you rather "regular"!!

Did anyone take magnesium during their pregnancy to help with Braxton Hicks and/or leg cramps? I'm 28w2d and I get painful leg cramps pretty much every night. I also tend to have an irritable uterus that gets crampy or BH frequently. I try to stay hydrated but I require a LOT of water. I saw that some women take magnesium to help with both BH and leg cramps... have you tried it? did it help?
