I live just north of Portland now, but lived in Portland for years. We moved out of Portland when our pre-baby condo became too small post-baby but we found we couldn’t afford to move more in-town into a larger place. Housing prices for anywhere in Portland are pretty crazy. I loved living in both the East and West ends and we had a condo that was just a few blocks up from Back Cove in the Woodfords neighborhood, which has exploded in the past 2-3 years. I would move back to that neighborhood in a heartbeat – lots of new (and old) restaurants, shops and short walk to Back Cove. Additionally, Ocean Avenue elementary is supposed to be very good and is a newer building.

Looking outside the city; Scarborough is basically the new Cape Elizabeth for everyone priced out of CE and VERY popular with my coworkers with children. SoPo is rising on that list too, and in both towns there are some walkable neighborhoods vs. just being a suburb.

I’ll wall you some daycare information. There are a few Portland area ladies on here so hopefully others will chime in as well!

I do! I'd love to give input, but will have to write back after bedtime as my kids are begging for attention if you can believe it! We first lived in the East End in 2013 which was so awesome but turned out not to be very baby friendly apartment wise. Great walkability etc., but three floor walk up with shared coin op laundry in basement... oof.

From there we moved to Riverton which was affordable but terrible for walkability...

Now we live in the Rosemont/Deering Heights and LOVE it. We've been here a year. Super walkable - we walk to Deering Oaks park almost every day in the summer, and there's even a smaller splash pad and community pool a couple blocks from the house! It's in the Longfellow school district which was our main searching point when we were looking to buy.... It's not the most affordable part of town but you get the school and neighborhood you're paying for. And it's not as bad as the West End for sure.

I've heard good things about South Portland, but can't speak from experience....

Are there any Maine Bee's out there?

My husband and I lived in Portland from 2011-2014 while he was in grad school, and we may be trying to move back. Now we have a baby - so the tiny apartment we lived in in the West End and the style of living we experienced doesn't really apply any longer!

I'm looking for information regarding child care, approx. prices, good daycares or nannies, etc.

Additionally, where do you recommend we look to move? I loved living in the West End, the old houses, the neighborhood feel, and mostly the walkability to everything on the peninsula. Alas, we will never afford the buy a house there :)
We are looking for a neighborhood that has walkability to local restaurants, parks, etc.
And we love the Portland area, but are open to moving further south.

Thanks for any input about moving back, specifically as a family with a young child!
