In the same boat over here! I eat a vegetarian, not very processed diet and this pregnancy is kicking my butt. Junk food is all I can stomach, and even what I want changes from day to day. The thought of fruit and veggies sounds horrible right now.

My midwife said the same thing with my first. It's all about eating whatever you can. My daughter hasn't been any worse for wear, despite my similar worries last pregnancy. Now I'm in the same boat as you, once again. Last time I could only tolerate Italian, this time it's fruit. Find what works for you and do that until you feel better! Mine lasted until 16/17 weeks last time. :)

you gotta eat whatever works :) I ate an embarrassing diet the first 3 months (well, still sorta am, just turning that corner in week 13). and I couldn't keep down my prenatals no matter how hard I tried. but baby looked great at my NT scan - I believe my OB said baby takes all they need from you (as much as they can) and you need to eat well/take vitamins to replenish your own stores. of course stuff like folic acid is important, but do what you can!

@Amurray: I'm glad you're feeling better! I'm a vegetarian and usually eat healthy but couldn't keep most things down during the first trimester. Eat what you can and sleep a lot.

Also, try smoothies, even if they're from places like Tropical Smoothie Cafe or Smoothie King which can possibly be a good option. Feel better soon!

I ate Little Caesar's! I was so sick the first tri the only thing I could eat was LC's $5 cheese pizza and crazy bread. I haven't eaten that since I was a kid in the '90s!

@Amurray: it sounds like you eat very well and have a good relationship with food! Good for you! We eat like that too, dh is a cook at a local organic coop, but golly first trimester I ate crazy bread and danishes. I was sick for a couple weeks and had to eat like that, but I did start feeling better and I went to town (so to say) back to my old ways with local meat and kale

Thanks so much ladies! I just don't really have anyone to talk to about this stuff at this point. My closest friend who has the sweetest 6 month old is a mostly gluten free always vegan which is awesome, but I feel kind of bad talking about junk food with her. And my other best friend I would talk to is is nurse-she worked in emergency pediatrics for many years is 7 weeks away from her wedding and I feel like it is more important to help her along right now than vice versa. Also she lives two hours away and I would like to tell her in person when she is in town for the shower I am hosting. So I guess I was feeling a little isolated. I totally started laughing and crying in the kitchen last night over it on M's shoulder. I love M so much, but this change is so big for both of us that we are still trying to figure out what this new part of our life looks like.

As previous people posted, in the first trimester it's just important to eat and keep food down, you can worry about nutrition in the 2 & 3rd!

ITA with other posters that say just get through 1st trimester, however you have to! You have plenty of time to eat very healthy and make sure you & your baby get the nutrients you need. It was so impossible for me to pick out in advance what I'd eat that's healthy.. I hope you'll feel better soon in a few weeks!!

@Amurray: I was eating insanely healthy before first trimester hell set in but ever since food is just gross. I don't really enjoy anything at all anymore so j gave myself permission to eat whatever sounded edible. This was my grocery cart last week. Haha :) I did find that carrots and sugar snap peas raw from the fridge were actually pretty good to me still so that's really the only veggies I've been able to handle. Also I found a boxed chocolate muffin mix that was more natural ingredients...they are still basically cupcakes but it's the only thing I can eat for breakfast haha :) at least they are made with whole wheat flour! Hang in there...it will be better soon!

I could have written this post about myself, I felt so guilty about the types of food that I was eating during my first trimester. The others are right you need to be kind to yourself at this stage. My diet got way better at around 16 weeks. Admittedly, I have had a few of weeks (21-24) where my MS returned and I went straight back to carbs and processed stuff that I could tolerate. I am happy to report that this week I am back on track with my healthy ways. My advice is just eat what you can keep down and squeeze in the good stuff when you can too but don't beat yourself up.

When I told my RE I was having trouble getting things to stay down, and how worried I was about it having an effect on the babies, she told me that she survived both of her pregnancies on Cheerios. I figured that her stats depend on my successful, healthy pregnancy, so I took her advice to eat whatever I could.

Please don't get down about the way you're eating now. I too normally eat everything homemade from scratch, not because I'm dieting but because of food allergies. Then when I got pregnant horrible nausea struck and I existed solely on processed food while my husband learned to fend for himself.

I swear I ate so many Oreos and cans of soup that I started to worry that we'd never like healthy food again. But tonight I ate my first Oreo (out of starvation) since having the baby and couldn't believe what drove me to eat them all that time, so don't worry...it's not permanent.

@.twist.: Yes fettuccine. Anything with a creamy sauce!

First trimester I barely ate. When I did I ate bagels, mac n cheese, tacos, and other empty carbs and junk food. My daughter is brilliant and amazingly healthy. I'm doing just fine too. I think everything will be ok... :-)

Just eat what stays down. you can eat healthy in a few months, no biggie

When i was pregnant, the $1 chicken sandwich from mcdonalds was a regular for me (after the gym, ironically). Haven't touched it in at least a year plus. So....it's not a slippery slope

eta: women all over the world, in all kinds of conditions, have been having babies and continue to have babies despite not eating organic, healthy, vegetarian, whatever food. It's our biological survival mechanism to somehow be drawn to the safer foods like carbs and whatnot.

I went through the same thing in the first trimester. Major food aversions and no desire to cook anything (well going near it would make me gag). Only things I could tolerate were crackers, lime Popsicles, and spicy Korean soups. I had a major aversion to any sort of meat or vegetable. After about week 13, my appetite quickly came back.

@Amurray: hang in there. I'm 10 weeks and feeling just like you're describing. I've had tortilla chips with cheese at least once a day for the past probably 5 days because it's all that sounds good. Survival mode is what I keep calling it. I'm even down 3 lbs from my pre-preg weight, but my midwife is not surprised or concerned. She just said I'll have time to make up for it later.

What's working for me now is taking a dose of generic Unisom (doxy -something) and b6 every night with my prenatal. That at least makes the next morning doable and most of the day ok, but I'm still very very limited as to what I can eat. Hardly any meat or vegetables, unfortunately.

DH picked up a bunch of smoothie ingredients tonight on his way home so I'm going to give that a try...

Your standard diet is pretty much how we strive to eat (though we skip the butchering our own animals part ;) ) Just know this, you're not hurting the baby by eating bad. The first tri is rough, so eat whatever you can. Your doctor shouldn't give you a hard time about it! You'll get back to normal soon...

@Amurray: you definitely need to be kind to yourself. I'm surviving (mostly) on French fries, jolly ranchers, rolls, croissants, saltines, etc. This happened during my first pregnancy too and it got better for me by week 15.

@swedishfish I am 7 weeks. I'm just feeling really frustrated and a little bit out of control. I guess I just need to be kinder to myself.

@jess1483 calories over content, I like it. Good idea with M. He does not know much about cooking, but after baby comes I guess he will need to be prepping more meals so now is as good of a time as any.

How far along are you?

I survived on Cheeseburgers, ginger snaps and dried fruit when I had morning sickness. It's not the end of the world to eat whatever you can keep down for a little while. I usually had a good breakfast, since my "morning" sickness was usually from 1:30pm-bedtime, but just did whatever I had to do to have calories when it was bad.
