I would halve the mustard otherwise it's too mustard-y

@LulaBee: id love the recipe if you don't mind sharing. I'm making shells & cheese for my daughters little mermaid birthday party. The only time I made mac n cheese in our ip it was a bust.

@Foodnerd81: Just dump it in cold, get it warm, add some extra milk and stir occasionally

@T.H.O.U.: I was looking at that one but it said it had to bake for 40 minutes or something. Do you bake it then scoop into the crock pot or just put it in cold and cook it that way? I didn't want to buy a whole big thing and ruin it if i did it wrong.

@Foodnerd81: Honestly our go-to is buying the Costco mac and cheese and dumping it in the crock pot for get - togethers. Splash of some extra milk mid way and its great.

@Foodnerd81: I never have, but anytime I am reheating pasta (like baked ziti), I always undercook the pasta.

I would additionally spray the crockpot with nonstick cooking spray, forgot to mention that before.

Do you have an instant pot? We have a mac n cheese recipe that you could make ahead, stick in fridge, then cook in instant pot during the party (all you would have to do is turn it on and it cooks for you). Super gooey and delicious.

@T.H.O.U.: @looch: have you ever put it in the crock pot? I was thinking of making it that morning and leaving it in crock pot on low but wasn't sure how it would taste. Good point about undercooking and cream cheese!

For Annie's specifically, I would slightly undercook the pasta. Then I would drain it well and add to it back to the pot with milk, cream cheese and the powder, stir to combine. The cream cheese binds it a little bit better so that when you let it sit, it doesn't separate. I make this for my son's lunch on a regular basis and it's the only way that it doesn't end up as mush if you're not eating it right away.

Then I'd put it in a crockpot on the warm setting.

What about keeping it in the crock pot to stay warm. When I have reheated mac and cheese, adding extra milk and re-heating slowly is key.

@Foodnerd81: can you just prep the components in advance and combine them last minute? Like boil the pasta and toss it in oil and keep it in the fridge, mix up the milk and powder in a jar, and then just mix everything together in a big pot with butter right before it's time to eat? You can keep it warm in the crockpot and occasionally splash a little extra milk in if you think it's getting dry.

Also- we are having sandwiches and stuff catered for the adults and any kids that will eat them. The Mac and cheese is mostly for the kids though everyone is welcome to it.

Any recipes or tips for make ahead Mac and cheese for a party?

My almost 4 year old loves it, particularly Annie's shells and cheese. She also likes when I make it homemade but definitely prefers the box. For her birthday party coming up in July, I would like to have it for her and the other kids, but don't want to make a big batch in the middle of the party.when I've tried reheating it it usually comes out gummy. I know I could make a big tray of homemade ahead of time and bake it during the party but I'd also rather not heat the house up for an hour in July.

Has anyone had success with a recipe that tastes like Annie's and could be microwaved well or maybe keeps in a slow cooker or something?

I bought some in the grocery store prepared food section and she didn't even finish her serving. 😥
