@catgirl: @HappyBaker: I have good luck putting the Costco macaroni and cheese in the slow cooker on low a few hours before a party. It was heated through but not too mushy by party time.

I love the idea of a make your own sandwich bar! But agree with others that soup would be tricky. I think a green salad and a pasta salad would be good choices. Along with some chips or pretzels for a crunch.

If you really want to serve something warm, you could make macaroni and cheese in the crockpot. It would be able to be on the same plates as sandwiches and is easier to eat while standing.

@HappyBaker: totally not lame. Recently at a work function we provided make your own sandwiches to our clients. I hadn’t thought much of it because I usually take a part the premade sandwiches anyway, but I heard a few people talking about how it was nice to assemble their own sandwich. There weren’t that many choices, but the possibilities are endless.

A hearty ie (pasta) based side salad would be delicious too.

Personally I would rather some easy to eat salads over soup- seems too potentially messy unless everyone has an actual seat at a table. But any soup could be made ahead of time and just heated up in the crock pot that morning. I love chili, tomato soup (don’t have a good recipe), and butternut squash soup- skinny taste has a yummy one with coconut milk.

My favorite sandwich side is potato salad- but again I don’t have a good recipe. Depending on the crowd maybe a quinoa salad- I like the skinny taste one with mango and black beans, or this one with a maple dressing, apples, spinach, nuts... https://www.twopeasandtheirpod.com/apple-walnut-quinoa-salad/

I think that sandwich bar sounds great!

@MamaCate: Ooh good point I didn't even think of that! I was thinking of putting it in coffee mugs but even that would be dicey to be walking around with! Maybe I'll skip the soup and just make chili or something a little thicker. Thanks!

@Meowkers: Probably sounds lame but just 3 or 4 different meats, cheeses, assortment of really nice bakery rolls / bagels / croissants, and lots of veggies and condiments for toppings. A friend did it for a baby shower and it was nice to just be able to make what you actually wanted!

@HappyBaker: I am wondering how soup would work if it is potluck style? Will there be table seating for everyone? I am trying to picture myself balancing soup and a sandwich on a couch and thinking it might not be worth it. I just wouldn’t want you to go to the trouble if people wouldn’t eat it...or maybe I am just lazy?

For DS's birthday this weekend we are going to do a make your own sub/sandwich bar. I'd love to serve a soup and salad as sides - any favorites? Bonus points for a soup I can make in the crock pot and not worry about!
