Agreed. When I was finishing grad school, I went on a pre-interviews trip to Ulta. I told them the type of look I was going for, my budget, my morning prep time, and let them go! What I loved about Ulta was the mix of upscale and drugstore brands, so they could help me mix it up (and therefore stay in budget). Good luck!

I am a super lame person and I like all things to be super easy so I go to Sephora (or you could try MAC) and I tell the nice lady working there to do my face...and if I like it, I buy everything she put on me. It's just easier that way for me.
And they'll ask you....."do you want dark or light? professional or glam? blablabla"

I think you need a foundation, mascara and eye lash curler, some pretty blush and lip gloss. I don't know what you look like but eyeliner may be for you too:) I am not an eyeliner type of person. I don't use concealer on a daily basis either but if you have redness or dark circles, maybe yo should?

i love blush - makes you look more alive and vibrant. i also think for lips, you can just do a clear lip gloss or something with a little color.

another good resource is YouTube, for makeup tutorials, if you don't want to go into a sephora or a dept store. You can see what kind of makeup the girls on YouTube use and try to replicate it by buying drugstore stuff and testing it out yourself. have fun!

@redsmarties: Yeah it looked like it was really helpful and I'm really considering it. I don't think they would rip you off either. The girl I talked to said you buy a sephora gift card (I think for $100), then the service is free. So you ca spend the gift card on whatever you like that day and/or another time.

If you go into Sephora and have them help you out like that, I don't think you will necessarily get ripped off, but it might cost a little more than you expected, just because they don't sell the cheap stuff you can get in the drug store (no disrespect to drug store cosmetics-- that's what most of mine are!) But they might be able to help you pick some stuff out, so you have a better idea of what you need, and then you can buy one or two things then, and pick up the rest slowly so it isn't a big lump sum.
I typically wear some pressed mineral powder (from Sephora) tinted chapstick, and mascara, on a regular basis. Sometimes blush (love NARS orgasm too!) when I'm feeling fancy or like my face really looks dead and awful :) Eyeshadows generally I think are fine from the drugstore. I am very much NOT an expert.

I agree with @Boogs: that going to a department store or sephora would be a great way to try some products & get some tips! Good luck!

@Boogs: Oooh, that sounds good. Maybe I just need to go into a store and tell them to put makeup on me? I just don't want to get ripped off, haha.

I suck at makeup, but Sephora has a service where someone will shop around with you for whatever you want and they show you how to apply it. I'm kind of tempted to try. It's at the bottom of the page here: http://www.sephora.com/contentStore/mediaContentTemplate.jsp?mediaId=12600022

I recently got Nars orgasm blush and really like it.

I would also put on a little blush. I notice it makes a big difference when I wear/don't wear blush. It definitely brightens up your face. Just don't over do it! Good luck with your new job search!

Hey there,
So, I've been fortunate enough to always have a casual job (I'm a baker), which means I've never done more than just slap on some coverup in the morning. But now that I'm on the hunt for a more professional job in a new city, I know I need to get my make-up act together.

What do you ladies recommend I should start with? I'm thinking I need mascara, eye liner and lip-something, but I'm clueless about the products to start with. Suggestions?
