I saw someone explain it with, "you can never become MORE innocent if you talk to the police." It's hard to explain though that innocence or giult is completely beside the point. </p> <p>@Greentea: You're completely right. Talking to anyone alone can be dangerous. A child should always have an advocate present whether that in most cases a parent or in severe cases an attorney. </p> <p>I struggle with this whole thing because I do believe police should be respected, but at the same time I believe that they may not always have YOUR best interest in mind. Not to talk to school people either, if they get pulled into a room, that I should be there. I know people who are adamant that if they are innocent they have no issues speaking to the police. I've tried explaining that the words are "anything you say or do will be used AGAINST you" and that doesn't seem to click, "but if I'm INNOCENT". It doesn't matter. </p> <p>I hope that my kids don't ever have to deal with police, but I'm not stupid enough to not prepare them for an encounter. </p> <p>My worry is that, even with a "talk", police can be very convincing, and if they pull the "befriending" card, my kids may have no reason to "doubt" their kindness/understanding/whatever.
