It's in my parents advanced directive/will.

We just had ours done.... Executor, guardianship etc. our wishes are to be creamated and have your ashes spread out by my family's beach house. We will also share a headstone where my moms side of the family has many plots so people have a place to visit us/evidence that we lived.

My parents have both donated their bodies for scientific research as a university. I'm not 100% sure of the details but they've given my sister and I paperwork related to it.

Not sure about DH's dad - his mom was cremated and her ashes are still with my FIL because he just hasn't decided where to spread them.

Culturally, my side, we are always buried. My parents are still alive but they will be buried when they past. It's superstitious to not buy plots before death. My fil was cremated but our trust indicates that we will be buried since that's what my husband wants. My husband's maternal grandfather, still alive, has six plots but I told my husband I don't want to be buried near him.

I plan on donating my body to science.

I have no need for my body after I die and I would like to keep educating students after I am gone. I am an anatomy professor and work with cadavers daily. It is such an amazing gift for people to donate to science.

Most individuals who pass away in the elder years cannot donate their organs due to age and/or medication restrictions. So they seek out other methods to give back. When one donates their body to science their body may be used for medical advancing research or for medical education. In medical education the body donors become the future healthcare provider's first patient and best teacher. The donors help me teach the students all the amazing and wonderful intricacies of the human body.

Body donation is also cost effective as the institution will pay for the cremation and if you would like you can have your remains returned to your family.

Its a beautiful way to give back after you are done with the body that has walked you through life!

@mrsjyw: really good point about organ donation! I've made it extremely clear to DH and my family that I want to donate whatever I can before I'm cremated.

Ils have two sets of plots in their hometown 1.5 hours up north.

My parents want to be cremated and their ashes in their hometowns in Korea, but if we can't make the trip, they've also mentioned a lake here that they want their ashes spread.

I'd like to be cremated after my good organs have been donated.

I, thankfully after what happened, come from a family of planners. Parents purchased a bench in a cemetery in my hometown where my dad's parents are already buried. The bench currently has 4 spots for urns, and Lucas resides in one of these, and my parents will eventually occupy 2 more. My DH and I decided that we will expand the capacity of the bench (from 4 to 8) and that he and I will spend eternity next to Lucas's ashes. I was so thankful that my parents had already made those decisions, because it made our decisions for Lucas much easier and I really wanted him to be with family..

I told the DH that I would like to be buried. Though, if money were an issue, I would be okay with being cremated.

I think DH wants to cremated.

It's so hard to think about.

Everyone on my side of the family wants to be cremated, myself included. I don't really care what happens to my ashes after that. DH wants to be cremated as well, but I have no idea what my in-laws want or have planned.

My parents (and grandparent!) are getting older, so this has been on my mind lately. So depressing to think about.

GRANDPARENTS: My one remaining grandparent will be cremated and her ashes put on a mountain in Japan where her ancestors also lie.

PARENTS: My parents have actually bought two sets of plots: a long time ago they bought plots in the town where my dad was born, and more recently they bought plots where they live now. Both locations are far away: one is 7 hours by car, and the other is ~36 hours by plane and car. (So far away!)

ME: I would like to be cremated. If there's some place that's meaningful to me, maybe I'll ask for my ashes to be sprinkled there..

Have you made arrangements for after death?
