Do your kids like spaghetti squash? I used it last time to make lasanga and left out the noodles completely. I layered the cooked squash, sauce and cheese. The whole family enjoyed it!

@jedeve: @Shutterbug: @looch:

Yah what I'm making isn't technically lasagna any more. I just don't know enough about pasta to refer to it properly! If the kids eat it tonight, I'll find it out... otherwise I will stop baking pastas for them!

@mrs. wagon: He slowly warmed up to pizza, and has been eating it pretty well for the past six months or so! So I thought we'd try lasagna, which has a lot of similarities to pizza!!

Just want to say this is one of my favorite recipes! Always comes out delicious! I've heard running the no boil noodles under hot water before layering helps too.

Lasagne has to have layers, otherwise it is just baked whatever.

You can so pre boil the no cook noodles, makes then very soft.

@mrbee: Yep, my aunt makes a lasagna casserole. I'd have to find her original recipe, but it's really good. This is something similar:

I make a turkey-zucchini lasagna that my family loves:

@mrbee: I make bowtie lasagna all the time using this recipe, just made it last night: http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/2010/07/16-minute-meal-2-bowtie-lasagna/

I think you will be fine substituting. You can use your recipe but follow Ree's directions, basically what you said, just mixing everything in one big pot after the meat and noodles are cooked.

Made this recipe last week, from a rec from Andrea!
http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/neelys/mamas-lasagna-recipe/index.html

The kids ate it pretty well! But I noticed that they struggled with the lasagna pasta... they tend to eat the corkscrew rotini a lot better. So tonight, I'm gonna try the recipe again but this time with rotini instead of lasagna pasta.

Usually I use oven-ready lasagna, but this time I plan to cook and drain the rotini and use that instead. And also, instead of having multiple layers of lasagna... I think I'll just mix everything together in one big layer.

My question for you guys: can you just swap out pasta types like this? Any advice for this inexperienced cook? Thanks!!
