What about putting the toddler bed under the window and making it daybed style?

Move the dresser, hamper and diaper pad to the spice rack book wall. Then, move the cube storage and rocky (catty cornered) on the old dresser wall?

@psw27: It would stink to block the plantation shutters since I love them! BUT that window also doesn't have a screen in it so other than the floor AC unit in it, it's never used.

@LindsayInNY: we have the taller Hemnes dresser and I like it. I have plastic bins in some of the drawers (without tops) to help keep it organized since the drawers are pretty big (so like one for socks, one for underwear, one for pjs, etc)

@LindsayInNY: yeah! I don't think there is anything wrong with blocking the window if its the best use of space! We have to block windows in our house and it doesn't look so bad.

@Becky: I've considered some of these... Namely the nighttime changing and feedings. We have a comfy arm chair in the living room near an outlet that I think I'll move an ottoman/foot rest to. And DH and I talked about moving the changing pad out there as well. I figured LO2 will be in our room close to 6 months (instead of DD's 3 months) until sleeping is more consistent (aka no 4 month regression BS lol). We've been torn on replacing the dresser or not since we want to move out of our current place in 4-5ish years. In a perfect world, I'd love to just trash all the bedroom furniture and start from scratch instead of moving it but that might not be realistic. It's just an Ikea dresser though so buying the taller version might still be a better option. And I think a bed with storage might be ideal too. If we go that route, I'm thinking tall dresser in between closets where crib currently is. Then crib and DD's toddler/twin bed in upper/middle left corner area of room?

@psw27: So have dresser sort of in front of that window then? They're big/tall windows.

@bhbee: We actually have the Hemnes dresser in there as it is! I'll have to check the day bed option.

Related to one of the posts above - I really love the ikea daybed (hemnes) we got for my now 3yo, if you get a full twin vs toddler bed. I felt like it had kind of a crib like feel with the 3 sides of the daybed to make it cozy. We read on it all the time (just get some pillows for the back) which might help with removing the chair. Plus it has three HUGE deep drawers underneath that if well organized could really hold a lot of clothes etc (ours is a mess of toys unfortunately). It also has a trundle you can pull out - my kids have decided to sleep there together for the past week. Just a lot of functionality and it looks nice.

I have a changing pad on my own dresser and I think we could get away with just that since we live in a small house, so I’d definitely vote for a taller dresser.

I would put the toddler bed along the wall (upper right corner towards bottom right corner) where the spice rack bookshelves are with the feet towards the radiator. I'd keep the crib where it is. I'd move the dresser along the wall under the window (top wall in your pic). I'd shift the rocker to the upper left corner and put the four shelf cube next to that along the left wall.

We didn’t use the changing pad with DD2 very much. I know several people who have a hanging table in a more central location of the house and nothing in the bedroom. If they will be sharing a room, you won’t be able to change the baby in there at night anyway. I would consider getting a narrower, tall dresser they can both use for clothes. I would also consider a twin captains bed with drawers underneath. That might help with storage issues. My kids share a room and I really wish I had a chair in there. Reading to them at night is hard (I sit on a bean bag chair!). However you prob won’t be rocking a newborn in there at night when your preschooler is sleeping so I vote to move it out.

@DesertDreams88: I don't think the closets are big enough for a crib. AND the doors are almost 100 years old, covered in loads of paint, so probably not easy to remove, LOL.

@Mrs D: She'll be close to 4 when we move LO2 into that room and the crib. I looked at a lofted bed and even starting googling ideas for a crib UNDER a lofted bed. I think the Ikea one is too close to the ground to allow that but we could move storage under instead. A viable option!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I'd have to measure to see if that side can fit both the dresser and rocker. Problem with hamper/diapers is that we're in a 4th floor walk up condo with no laundry in-unit. So space is limited. I think the rocker corner OR the front corner (there's more wall space) could work well for the beds. I could even do the cubes at the foot of her toddler/twin bed instead of along a wall?

I’d remove the hamper and diaper pail and slide the dresser closer to the door. Then put the rocker in that corner. The toddler/ twin bed would go along the radiator wall. Depending on the book spice racks those would stay as is or be reconfigured on the wall for your LO to access while in bed. The cubby would act as a night stand. The hamper and diaper pin could go behind the main door or in the closet or out of the room altogether. We gather soiled diapers and put them in the garbage daily and we put dirty clothes in the hamper in the laundry room.

I know you mentioned that DD is only 3.5 and maybe too young for a lofted bed but check out the Kura from Ikea...you could fit the 4 cube under it...along with maybe some other storage?

If you added organizers to the closets could you get more use? Since the radiator causes issues with access for the one next to the window maybe remove that door? and get more use from it?

This probably won't work but I'm going to throw it out there in case you want to change things up or it benefits a later reader.....

We took off the closet doors and put a mini crib in that space. We don't like closets for clothes storage. Instead we use cubes in 2 bookcases, one for each kid, with books on the top shelves and clothes on the bottom. LO has an IKEA twin bed that is low to the ground and has two pull-out drawers underneath for storage.

I’d take out the 4 cube shelf, move the rocker there and put the toddler bed or crib where the rocker is now. Then if necessary put the hamper in the corner on the other side of the dresser so the rocker wouldn’t be blocking any drawers.

I was going to suggest putting the dresser into the closet as well—that’s how we made room when lo2 was born as they share a room. Maybe you can rearrange what’s in that closet now—like keeping high up in other closets, or getting storage containers that go underneath beds.

Here's what I did:

Removed closet doors (stowed them under the bunkbed) and crammed it full of in-season clothes.
Got a bunkbed for the toddler. Used the upper level for the storage that used to be in the closets (make sure to put the ladder in the corner so there is no climbing).
Moved all toys out to the front room (when someone is taking a nap, you don't want the other one trying to sneak toys out).
Moved the changing pad into the front room. (you could also use one on the floor temporarily stowed under the bunkbed).
Lost the hamper. We just started carrying stuff straight to the washer or throwing it out in the hallway to be picked up later.

Depending on if you view the closet doors as a pain, maybe pull them off and put cute curtains up on tension rods to take up less "door swing" area.

@LindsayInNY: Got it, so no!

I feel like the dresser is huge and a bit of a space waster, can you switch the changing pad to the top of the 4 cube storage thing or remove it altogether? I kind of get the feeling that once you put the bed in there, you're going to lose the functionality as a play space if that has toys anyway.

@looch: We're tight on space and both closets are crammed already, LOL. The one by the window isn't the easiest to access with the radiator so it's more infrequent storage items. The front one has DD's clothes, a hanging organizer thing for things, DH's suits, winter coats... So lots of stuff, LOL.

Not sure if this would work with the measurements of your dresser, but I'd:
- move dresser to where the shelf is
- put crib where dresser is now
- have toddler bed coming out into room (not against wall) between closet doors, bed rails if needed
- move spice racks up on the wall and have 4-cube shelf underneath them (can double as an end table for rocker)

eta: hamper behind door next to closet, diaper pail where you can fit it in near the dresser or move to bathroom

@LindsayInNY: Our glider moved to our living room, and DD2 didn't like being rocked. She preferred to be bounced on an exercise ball, which was easy to move in and out. Our old house was 1100 sq. ft. with small bedrooms, so once we added the second kid, the bedroom really just became a bedroom without a lot of extra stuff in there (like the glider).

Need some design help... This photo is the current state of DD's room. She is currently in a crib. When LO2 comes, baby will be in our room. When they share a room, LO2 will go into the crib and DD will get a toddler bed (presumably). I don't know where to put these or how to make everything fit... We have a short but wide dresser right now with the changing pad on top. We could get rid of it and get a tall dresser instead (will lose a little drawer space) and put that where the crib is. Not sure if I'm missing an option... Ideas??
