It really does make me nervous about what she wears, but then again, I think that happens with every generation.

@jessiejo17: Totally agree!

@erinpye: ah, thanks! My mom is so old school... I went to private school and had uniforms til 12th grade. Her rule was my skirts had to be knee length... Maybe an inch above, that's it!

Yes, but I know that teenage girls will do anything to wear what they want (including changing in the bathroom of places which is what I did!) So I'm going to do my best to monitor, however I hope I can just teach my daughter to be fashionable without being slutty.

@mediagirl: lol! well growing up, I didn't get an allowance. if my friends were going to the mall and he had a reason to (behavior/grades), my dad would give me $20. I actually never expected an allowance because we just were never given one - it was normal to me. once I had a job (Junior and Senior year hs) I bought my own clothes.

I will admit I bought some low-cut tops that got me into some trouble but for the most part I was not into the super skimpy styles. I think my parents did a good job of raising me to not necessarily be over-the-top turtlenecks and boots, but to respect myself as far as looks went :)

Yes but how do you monitor this? Do you not give them an allowance so you buy all their clothes or do you go with them to buy their clothes? Do you not "allow" them to leave the house until they change their clothes if it is something inappropriate? GAH, now I'm worried.

@purrpletulips: geeeeez!!! I hate seeing what is in stores these days for girls. It's so disheartening.

Yes but I know from friends who have girls that it is hard because they just are not making clothes that cover much these days. My one friend had to go to 6 stores before they found shorts that fit the fingertip rule for her daughter's field trip last spring.

we were just talking about this the other day. I want to start early with respect so that she won't *want* to dress provocatively, but we'll play it by ear. Who knows..maybe in 15 years the style will be parkas ;)

@NYCaliMama: as someone who went to a school with a dress code, I can answer this one: The fingertip rule means the hem of a skirt can be no shorter than where the wearer's fingertips hit the leg, while the person is standing, with arms straight down :)

@mrsjyw: definitely! honestly even now, for some toddler clothes... I'm like no, she will look way too trendy/old for her age wearing some things. She's 4, but some things for her age look like the stuff for teens!

btw, what's the fingertip rule exactly?

Will you monitor your teenage daughter's wardrobe?

We went to the movie theater last weekend and DH was shocked at the short shorts that the teen girls were wearing...

I also read that article about racy prom dresses... and couldn't believe the stuff that teens are wearing nowadays! They look older than I do and I'm almost 29!

I don't want to be overbearing, but we both decided that we will def be enforcing the fingertip length and minimal skin bearing rule if we have a DD!
