@justjules: I'm sorry I didn't see your question to me earlier. The eo blend I mentioned is from DoTerra. I really do like it. I hope that your baby's little issues settle down soon. I had taken my girl to the doctor and the doctor actually prescribed a medicine. But when I looked into it further, I decided not to give the medicine to her. My girl grew out of her issues soon enough and all is fine now.

Just to update everyone. We went to the doctors today and he does agree that she has reflux but because she is still gaining weight well doesn't recommend meds. He believes she will grow out of it in a few more months. I was kinda wishing for medicacine since it's been fairly miserable around here but it is what it is. Let's all hope she stops with the screaming and eventually settles down soon :)

@gingerbebe: yes of course. I have GERD that is not impacted by dietary changes and have had gastritis and an esophageal stricture because of it, and I take PPIs daily and have for years.

But there has been an significant uptick in prescriptions for "GERD" in infant and many times it without any GI appointments or tests for acid. The link had some interesting info. Just my own experience, half my new moms group had kids on some kind of reflux medication. Almost all the issues were solved by 6 months except for my LO,who took much longer to be able to tolerate dairy and soy. It's something to be informed about. There's also the witching hour(s), which has been totally real for both of my kids. Lots of people think the evening crying is related to gas or stomach upsets but sometimes it's just an immature nervous system.

@Anagram: While I don't disagree with being careful about overmedicating babies, not treating GERD can cause long term health problems on their own right. While my second child probably could have outgrown it without meds if we stuck it out 6 months, my first still didn't want to eat or enjoy eating for a long time even with medication because he related food with discomfort. Zantac is usually the first line and it doesn't really do any harm and it will be apparent if it's not working. I think doing a simple two week elimination is fine (and it's what I did for both my kids) but I just wanted to pipe in so as to not discourage anyone from medicating a kid who may have a legit reason for medication.

I would also say, there are a ton of dairy and soy free products these days and doing it for 2 weeks is super easy.

I went dairy free for both girls for longer than 6 months and I'm dairy free at the moment because I'm eating Paleo and I don't even find it very hard. Like tonight I made brownies (paleo brownies) because we have people over.

So don't be too intimidated by that part...it's actually fairly easy.

Our pediatrician actually recommends a simple elimination diet first before any kind of medication for an infant. She said infant reflux medications are the most over prescribed medication she sees, and she won't prescribe typically unless babies are falling off the growth curve and/or have seen a pediatric GI who has recommended. I had a baby with feeding issues and was dying for meds but the Ped and my husband were against medication as a first line of defense.

In the end, it was MSPI. There was a rapid improvement after I cut out dairy and soy in all forms. LO couldn't tolerate the alimentum/nutragimen formulas either. After age 2, she could have baked dairy. Now at 4 she can have any form but she doesn't drink cows milk.

@justjules I agree I would perhaps try reflux meds if your ped agrees before I go crazy eliminating a bunch of stuff. My son had very severe reflux and I didn't eliminate anything until he was on 3 reflux meds and still having problems.

@gingerbebe: @Silva: @Portboston: alright. It seems like the most common answer is silent reflux. I'm going to definitely call the doc to get her checked out for that. Thanks guys!

For what it's worth, there isn't evidence that supports nom eliminating foods unless there is a true milk/soy protein intolerance happening in baby (in which case you'd have a lot of other symptoms- blood in stool, mucousy poops, low weight gain). You can read more about this on Kelly mom. when my son was having trouble I wanted to try dairy/soy to see if it would help but my pediatrician husband and our kids pediatrician both advisrd against it.
We did, however, try reflux medication and it was like pure magic. My son would scream non stop in the car seat, nursed constantly, wouldn't sleep or go on his back without crying (I was wearing him literally all day long), and would sometimes be screaming but refuse to nurse. I didn't suspect reflux because he didn't spit up and was jumping up on the weight curves (As opposed to going down). Our pediatrician suggested we try it to see if it would help. On day two he didn't cry in his car seat at all, spent AN HOUR on his back on the floor just chilling, and basically hasn't cried since. He instantly became the happiest, chilliest baby.

It did take some playing to find the right med and dose but it was life changing for us. It's definitely a conversation to have with your doctor! Good luck!

@justjules: my husband and I thought eo's were a joke. I'm still not totally sold. But my friend who sells them insisted I try it. I was desperate. And sure enough, my baby was better the next day and now I stock up on it. But she sort of outgrew her issues after a few months. But I still use that eo if she hasn't pooped all day and it works wonders. I use it on myself too!

I thought my little guy was just gassy but it turned out to be silent reflux. Getting him on meds was a game changer but anytime I ate heavy dairy (ice cream, milk, etc) or peanut butter, he'd have a reeeeally rough night. So I cut those two things out and with the meds he was fine! He grew out of it around 7 months and has zero issue with Dairy or peanut butter as a toddler!

Yeah both mine had silent reflux. Not really spitting up but waking up 15-20 minutes after eating/sleeping screaming. They both grew out of it by 6 months (meaning they were off meds by then) but we still used gas drops liberally and didn't give super acidic foods and just watched them carefully for a while. DS1 was more severe than DS2.

DS was super gassy around the 3 month mark. It was formula related (BF didn't work out for me as a twin mom).

Both babies were on Similac Neosure (preemie formula) from when they left the NICU. DS had issues with gas that kept him up all night and nothing (gas drops and massages) was helping. We luckily were seeing the dr for their 3 month appt that next day. Dr suggested switching to another preemie formula made by Enfamil called Enfacare.

We switched DS to it and it helped. It sucked having two different bottles of formula but we didn't want to switch DD . It's not broken why change her formula. If you do a search on neosure, some babies are particularly gassy on it.

I don't know if this matters, but DD is always pooping. DS has been constipated and we've had to give him benefiber on a regular basis. When we tried prune juice, DS would not drink it. DD loved prune juice. Go figure! She's a pooper! LOL

@justjules: My oldest was ridiculously gassy and colicky. Cutting dairy helped a tiny bit, but the only thing that really worked after the fact was switching to formula. Even then, he was still super gassy. We found out just before 1 that he had an egg allergy, and a little after 3 that he had a tree nut allergy. Looking back now, I can't say whether or not I was eating either of those while nursing, but he has grown out of the egg allergy.

My LO went through a very gassy/fussy stage early on and the first thing I tried was to cut out all dairy. It ended up being very effective - within a week or so of the diet change, there was marked improvement. I wouldn't have jumped to that as a first step normally, but LO's father has a true dairy allergy and I'm allergic to sheep's milk, so it seemed like a more likely culprit in this case. I figured it was something I could try immediately and move on to more investigation later if necessary. I can't confirm that the improvement was definitely from cutting out dairy, but it seemed like it made a big difference at the time.

I added some dairy (like in baked goods) back in around 8 months and processed dairy (like cheese or yogurt) at 9 or 10 months with no problems. Now at 13mos, LO has no problem with cow's milk or other dairy.

Does your baby by chance have a lip or tongue tie? (Google pics if you aren't sure) Im a nicu nurse and we just did an education class with a dentist the specializes in lasering them. But he realized his kids had them because they were so gassy and miserable and sucking in so much air when they ate because it can affect feedings. Also, because I always like to try more natural things before meds, but I heard a baby chiropractor can do wondering for reflux/gasey fussy babies.

DD2 was super gassy. She started having green mucus poops. So I cut dairy and within a couple weeks she was much better. I was somehow eating dairy still ( I think restaurants, even though I told them I couldn't have it) and we always knew cause she would get super gassy and then be up all night. We switched to Nutramigen and she is much much better!

You might not want my advice as I didnt' change my diet.. but I have a very gassy/fussy boy. I determined he had silent reflux and took him to ped and they agreed so he was put on meds. As soon as we started the meds he got better. It really helped him.

I will also add that I have a close friend who had a baby 2 days after my son and he had the same issues, she cut out spicy food, milk and eggs to try to make him better but nothing worked. They ended up putting him on meds too but he still had issues.

All this to say that sometimes cutting out food doesn't work, sometimes it does and sometimes meds don't work but sometimes they do. Good luck. I hope you find the balance for you and your baby!

My son was gassy/fussy/refluxy - it started getting bad around 8 weeks and got progressively worse. (He had silent reflux and basically never spit up, but was super fussy and clearly in pain during and after feedings.) I cut dairy/soy for 3-4 weeks and it didn't seem to matter. What really helped was getting him on the proper dosage of reflux meds (in our case, Prilosec). I also had overactive letdown and an oversupply so block feeding helped as well. When I reintroduced dairy/soy, we had no issues because the meds were working.

I second the reflux maybe still being an issue. DS was only just diagnosed with reflux around your baby's age and he was on meds until almost a year old until we could wean him off. He didn't projectile vomit or anything, but lots of spit ups and had to hold upright after feeding and do an incline on his basinette for a longggg time. We did Ovol drops at every feeding and used a lot of different bottles for pumped milk to reduce gas. We didn't do dietary changes so I can't comment on that.

ETA: DW saw a lactation consultant for a while and there was some letdown issues that contributed to lots of gas. He would wake uncomfortable like you mentioned as well. She hand expressed before nursing and we took lots of burp breaks.

@justjules: You may want to consider that it could be silent reflux as opposed to gas, especially before you go cutting out foods because
If she is waking up it could be because she is refluxing and it is causing her pain. We had to hold my DD upright for 30 minutes after each feeding and had her crib mattress at an angle which helped a bit

@justjules: Oh sorry, no, I meant they can test a diaper for blood. Sometimes the blood isn't visible to the naked eye.

@IRunForFun: hm that's good to know the doc can test. I think I'll call and see. What do they test for? A dairy sensitivity in the baby?
