@Mrs. Jacks: I agree. I'm actually in shock that anyone would place blame on the victim.

@HabesBabe: His dad owns a clinic. He came up with a fairly plausible story and she took the "medication". Sounds like he will be doing some time. I find it incredibly sad that some people are blaming the victim here. Sounds like unfortunately, professional and personal lines were blurred here with the guy's family's role in it. Are they held to account for prescribing something like this for a woman against her will?

This is one messed up story!

@Mrs. Jump Rope: This is an awful story but I'm with you. I would never take something based on third party recommendation, ESPECIALLY whilst pregnant! I would be checking everything I could, including reading the prescription info sheet, to make sure it was safe for pregnancy. I also look at a pill every time I take one to make sure it is the correct pill. There are always some kind of markings on a pill to indicate what it might be.

I don't mean to say this is the woman's fault, what her boyfriend did was terrible, but I think she was a bit irresponsible by not doing her own research (ie calling the doctor, reading the prescription box, asking more questions etc) before just popping any old pill. Didn't she even want to know what kind of an infection she had and/or how long it was going to take to clear up etc? I just think people need to exhibit some level of personal responsibility when it comes to their health. But I do feel for her, this is truly awful.

Yeah now that I think of it, DH used to pick up my prescription prenatals all the time and I never had to fill out anything and we dont have the same last name. I think they just ask for the address and date of birth to confirm

@Mrs. Pen: @pui: I never signed anything and my husband has a different last name from me (and is a different race from me) but the pharmacy has never had an issue giving him my prescriptions. I've had to ask him to do it sometimes when I ran out at the last minute and he was on his way home or when I had a really bad migraine and just couldn't go out.

@pui: perhaps using ID to match last names? Like I said, I never buy prescriptions so I'm not entirely sure. However many spouses at my clinic pick up for each other. Most of the time there are signed ROI's in their chart. Many people do list their bf/gf.

@Mrs. Pen: Well anyone could claim to be my husband or me to get medication not prescribed to them. I can see why they make you come in person with ID to prevent stuff like that. Just a few weeks ago our Pharmacy was closed due to a police investigation because someone tried to do just that (pretended to be someone else to get their drugs).

I agree though, he could have changed the label/bought both and switched them up. I thought of that too in one of my earlier comments.

@pui: I'm not sure, I never get prescriptions but I don't see why it would be a problem. In addition I think it would be easy to bring home the right prescription, as well as have his and he could have easily pretended to take one from her pill bottle, but use his instead.

She was sick, she could have been in bed and he brought her the antibiotic with water.

@pui: my husband picks up my prescriptions for me all the time.

I still look at all the bottles and read the inserts, every single time. I'm overly cautious, though. My pharmacy once accidentally filled a prescription incorrectly (they gave me Claritin ready tabs, which are not pregnancy safe, instead of regular Claritin).

So even though I trust my husband, I still read labels and would absolutely never take anything without inspecting it first.
My pharmacy even includes a small message on each bottle that says "this pill is xx shape and has xx marking on one side" etc on it to help identify the pill.

@spaniellove: I 100% agreed. This is not her fault in any capacity. If DH picked up my pills from a pharmacy, came home, got out two pills and handed me water I would think nothing of it. In fact he always does this for me! I don't think she was "blind" to trust the man she loved.

I don't think it's fair to criticize a victim based on the reasoning that we might have used with our experience and knowledge. I'm not her, but I think it's possible that a woman could trust her partner to help handle her medical care. He most definitely took advantage of her naivete and lack of experience with the system.

My doctors office (my PCP, my OB and my RE, hell, even my dentist!!) has a policy where they can only speak to the patient UNLESS the patient signs a form saying that they can speak to XX person.

Hell, my OB's office had my sign a paper saying it was okay for me to leave a voice mail on my cell phone.

I seriously find it super hard to believe that this girl thought a doctor called her *boyfriend*, he went and picked up *her* prescription, and *he* told her how to take the medication.

What happened to her is no doubt horrifying and terrible, but seriously? There's a million red flags going off here.
