Another good point, what if she finds a replacement. Yeah, that's why I'm kinda leaning against telling her. Plus, I'm going to run out of vacation and have to use sick time for interviews. I don't think the manager's wanting to know is a very good reason to tell him/her. Until you're really ready to get out the door and/or compare or leverage offers. I'd be too scared of losing my job as a result. Or if they started to look for a replacement and found one before I left, and forced me to leave... which actually happened before :( I was asked to leave a job I loved 6 weeks before I was supposed to all because I was trying to be courteous in letting them know I was looking elsewhere. I want them to be happy, so I'm happy to help them maximize their potential whether that's with me or elsewhere. At my last position, I let my supervisor know I was looking and she was super supportive and even sent me interesting positions. But we have a great relationship. In previous positions I didn't mention anything! There are other reasons but I don't think I'll tell her or anyone at work those reasons. If you feel close to her, then I'd say something. Otherwise, if she's part of the reason you're leaving, then I probably wouldn't proactively bring it up! She works in a different department from me but she asked me if I was going to tell my boss about me job hunting. She gave an interesting viewpoint that she has known about her reports applying to other jobs (word gets around if you apply locally) and she would like it as a manager to know about things like this. She said she could potentially try hard to keep you, help with your job search, or take in consideration your work load. I personally am afraid that my boss could let me go earlier. Although, I just had mid review and my boss was really happy with what I've done this year. So I don't think she would do anything to retaliate. She kept asking me if there was anything else. I was being really short with my answers but I had to keep my mouth shut. If I tell her, I will at least wait til I start getting interviews.
