@babycanuck: and also it will feel not that comfortable at first (like how it feels when water gets up your nose when swimming...I mean you are basically flooding your nose with salt water) but if you get the tilt right it won't feel like it's also running down your throat/mouth. And if there is a little drip I just spit it out of my mouth. I focus on my breathing and do exaggerated breathing through my mouth which helps the water flow I think. Also, if you're super plugged up let the water drip through your nose and when it feels like it's slowing down I put the pot down and just blow my nose into several tissues. And then do the Neti pot again and sometimes stop to blow my nose again. This morning I felt pretty good but after doing the Neti pot my nose was sooo clear and I blew tons of disgusting stuff (sorry!) into several tissues. It really gets all the gunk you can't blow out on your own out and the salt packet is a natural antibacterial and is supposed to help keep your nose clearer

@sandy: Thanks for this. I think I will go get one to try. I find I get the headaches because I can't breathe overnight in one nostril. I went to hot yoga last night and it totally cleared me up, or so I thought, until I woke up this morning. I don't get drippy nose at all....always plugged up!

@babycanuck: I usually use Flonase but while pregnant I use Claritin and the Neti pot. My allergies are so bad this year and I felt like I was drowning at night from the post nasal drip...I basically couldn't sleep and was miserable all day from blowing my nose. I could never do the Neti pot and always felt like I was drowning and refused for years. My DH convinced me I needed to give it another try bc I was just so mkserable. It is LIFE CHANGING. Like PP said, you have the find the right tilt of your head...mine is to look forward a lot (almost looking down and to the side)...I absolutely cannot look straight ahead and do it or it will flood the back of my throat and make me feel like I'm drowning. After just one use my nasal passages were so much better and I slept through the night with hardly any tissue use. The next day my nose was just dropping but it wasn't time to take my next dose of Claritin. I used the Neti pot around 3:00...again LIFE CHANGING...my nose was clear until bedtime around 9:00. I did it once more before bed and slept great again. The other thing my DH mentioned is to use pretty warm water (like a lot warmer than you'd expect bc it does not feel good if you use cold or even room temperature water)

@babycanuck: gotcha. I ended up having surgery and it was a lifesaver! But definitely use the neti pot! It was super helpful for me before my surgery.

I'm horrible about water around my nose, but using the neti pot its the best thing I've ever done! I always feel amazing after using it! Just be sure to use warned purified water, regular tap water isn't recommended.

@babycanuck: It just takes a little practice - watch some videos on YouTube! You basically just have to figure out the forward tilt angle of your head... too far forward and you get the 'water up your nose' sensation, and too far back and it goes down your throat. Just play with it a little til you figure out the right position, and it'll be much less scary.

also, make sure you use distilled water - nasty infections can happen from tap water.

@hotchildinthecity: I have acute sinusitis so the only way to manage it according to him is through nasonex or flonase.

I may suck it up @JoJoGirl: I'm just nervous lol. It grosses me out and i'm worried about stuff going down the back of my throat.

Have you tried the neti pot that is a squeeze bottle? It is a lot faster and easier to use than a traditional neti pot.

Suck it up and use the neti pot :) that's my only advice - it's the only thing that really works. Decongestants like Sudafed have a "bounce back" effect that makes the congestion worse when they wear off.

Have you seen an ENT lately? I had all these problems and it turned out i had tons of scar tissue in my sinuses. A good ENT is soooo helpful.

How do you manage congestion - besides the neti pot?

Neti pot freaks me out, I'll be honest. I have terrible congestion, all year, and worse during allergy season. These days I wake up with migraines from it.

Help!
