@JennyPenny: I just remembered something I read that said that second trimester weight gain is the key to keeping yourself on track. That made sense with me, since even if you have to give yourself some slack in the first trimester due to morning sickness, usually you can get back to working out and eating healthier in the second trimester. So if you end up heavier than you wanted after the first trimester, you need to just commit to being healthier in the second tri instead of just giving up, since that will compound it.

@JennyPenny: they gave me nutrition advice (hence the high protein). I think just being aware helped a lot... I didn't try to reason away bad eating habits because of the pregnancy!

@JennyPenny: DH's "specialty" is making a chicken quesadilla on the foreman grill (with pre-cooked chicken, shredded cheese, and frozen peppers/onions.) He can also do three-bean turkey chili and BBQ pulled pork in the crock pot - not exactly gourmet, but it definitely helps that he can make at least a few healthy options!

With my first, I gained about 35 pounds from week 10 until I delivered. I actually gained about 45 pounds from my BFP weight. This time, I started out heavier, but I had been lifting weights so I have no idea how much that affected things, but at 15 weeks I have lost a pound. I'm trying to stay on track and not eat as many sweets, but it's hard. Good luck!

I gained 50 lbs with my first, but only 19 with my second. I had a frank talk with my midwives this time around about my weight, and asked them to help hold me accountable. Then at every appointment I asked for a goal before my next appointment. I weighed myself daily, and tracked my weekly weight. I tried to eat more protein and fewer carbs, which held me over better between meals.

At the end of the day you just do your best! Good luck!

@pastemoo: I have 4 stubborn pounds hanging on but I think some of that might actually be muscle with how hard I've been working. I didn't have pre-pregnancy body measurements to compare to so I have to go on weight. I also calorie tracked the 2nd half of my pregnancy because I saw how bad things were getting. What I noticed is that when I was good everything was good. But just 1 slip-up day would have crazy results. Usually when I track calories 1 slip up doesn't undo a whole lot and its easy to recover from, but that was not the case for me when pregnant. Hmmm...you may have just pointed me to an important lesson (though a slightly depressing one)

Thanks guys. It's so tough to hear "your body will do what it needs to" even though I know it's true. I know I feel jealous of moms who gained the "healthy" amount and then lost it easily because they didn't have excess, but maybe it was just how their bodies worked.

@Mrs Spoon: This makes me think I should get in the habit of snacking more now just to introduce more healthy snacks into my daily life. I don't really snack at all which is probably why it made Cheese Nips an easy go to snack when that 1st tri nausea hit.

@raspberries: LOVE the idea of teaching DH to cook. It'd have to be super simple, but if it means still getting a healthy meal seems worth it.

I think, with reasonable management on your part--your body will do what it will do.

I gained too much the first time. I started this pregnancy heavier (though I did lose all the weight the first time, school put a little back on me)--and every week starting in 2nd tri, I weigh the same as I did last time.
This time I'm not getting crap from my doctors because 1. my doctors are better now, 2. I have proof that I can lose it all, 3. I'm borderline on the normal range because I started out 8lbs heavier this time.

Both times I work out several times a week, I eat well, lots of veggies, etc. I calorie tracked some random days and I am not even eating more, my body is just doing whatever it wants. And I'm working on being ok with it.

Did you lose all the weight you gained with #1? I think you are doing it right--losing the weight first and starting healthier is a great idea! Good luck TTC.

I gained more with my second pregnancy - I was hoping having a toddler would keep me active but I think I had more time to work out with pregnancy 1 than pregnancy 2. I also had more complications this time that have made me be less active.
I think trying to commit to the gestational diabetes diet even if you don't have it - will help you manage weight tremendously. I had GD with my first pregnancy but not my second.

You've gotten some good tips. I just wanted to say to be kind to yourself if it doesn't work out. I've found that with my pregnancies, each one has had a different style of morning sickness in the beginning which really affected the way I gained. I tend to get nausea which doesn't go away unless I eat, and insane aversions to anything except carbs, so weight comes on really quickly at the beginning. With my first, I gained 6 pounds before a loss at 10 weeks. With my LO, morning sickness was milder so I managed to stay within the 5 pound recommendation for the whole first tri. With the next one, my morning sickness was the worst of all and I gained 10 pounds before a loss at 12 weeks, even with chasing around my toddler and walking an hour each day (I have a walking commute). All three times, I tried my best but had really different results. So for me it really depends on the pregnancy. There is lots of good advice out there but honestly I think some of it is just chance and genetics and you should try to be gentle on yourself.

I managed to gain just 26 lbs with each pregnancy. Here are my tips:

- keep working out the entire time. Even if it's just a 30 minute walk.
- eat normal. You're not really eating for two until you get closer to the 3rd tri.
- eat a veggie both at lunch and dinner to help fill up on healthy foods.
- drink tons of water
- have small snacks between meals that are nutrient dense and help you not overdo it at meal time. Fruit, nuts, cheese, yogurt--these were my go to.

I found with following these I was able to splurge when I wanted on sweets which is my weak spot and still maintain a healthy weight.

I gained 45 lbs the first time and about 32 lbs the second time. I didn't do anything differently and in fact, didn't have time to work out at all the second time around (and I did work out 2-3 times a week the first pregnancy).

One thing is that with a toddler, you have less time to lay around--with both of my pregnancies, I didn't gain because I was eating a ton (I eat far more now, as I produce milk)-it was because I was so sick, I spend all my non-work time literally lying in bed or on the couch my first pregnancy. I barely ate, because I had 24/7 nausea, but the things I could stomach were like.....chips. cereal. White bread and peanut butter. And when you are just laying down all day long, you are probably only using 1000 cals or so.

So, the second pregnancy I was also sick and could only eat crap, but I couldn't just lie down all the time because I had a toddler. Just being ever-so-slightly-more active made me gain less.

I think it's definitely possible to have a healthier second pregnancy, especially now that you know what to expect, and how your body reacts to it. I'd start drinking lot of water now, get in the habit of doing some at-home exercise (I found that it's easier to keep it up if I don't have to drag myself to the gym), and figure out some quick, healthy recipes with a variety of ingredients (and ideally, teach DH to make them. :silly: )

I gained too much weight when pregnant with LO and trying to lose the baby weight before TTC #2 has been kicking my butt. I really want to stay in the healthy weight gain range the 2nd time around and keep up my healthy eating and fitness. I just know that fatigue and nausea wrecked all my good habits the 1st trimester last time and I ended up 15 lbs up in just those 12 weeks.

I'm wondering if any other ladies who gained too much the 1st time around had success in managing it in subsequent pregnancies. It just seems like if I couldn't swing it the first time, how will I be able to when I'm also busy managing a toddler. What were your experiences? Also, I'm just about to start TTC so any tips on things to do now before getting pregnant?
