I had the Medela Harmony and I could never get the hang of it. I would end up hand expressing instead. Or I just used my Freestyle.

@LovelyPlum: I know! So done though! I can hardly make it through a work day anymore.

Thanks for the input! I will have to checkout the lansinoh one, since that seems to be a crowd favorite! 🙂

@Mrs. Yoyo: @peachykeen: @travellingbee: I posted before I read responses. Yay for a good, reliable, cheap manual! Lansinoh for the win.

@jill_a55: I can't believe baby is going to be here so soon!!

To answer your question, I had a Medela manual that I used exclusively for the first month or so. It worked relatively well, never had complaints.

When I was weaning, though, I had to go buy another pump (we did it cold turkey, and I was out of town). I bought a Lansinoh, and I LOVED that thing. It was so much easier to use/had better suction than the Medela manual. So I recommend that!

@gingerbebe: I have one too! Very comfy with a soft flange, and I actually prefer it to my PISA except of course it takes longer because it only pumps one side at a time.

@Foodnerd81: I really didn't have to massage at all. I just kinda figured out how fast or slow to pump to get it going. When I went back to work, I found that my output started decreasing, so I looked at pictures of DD and that seemed to get me going. I just liked that I could control the manual better than electric. It worked for me.

@jill_a55: I have the lanisoh as well and like it. It does have a silicone band around the flange. I get very good results with it, but I also have a robust supply this time.

@Mrs. Yoyo: hmm I'll try that. I tried it right after she had nursed, on the other side, so I thought that would be enough for let down. But not so I guess.

@jill_a55: It actually looks like they've changed it from the one I used, which was this:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000P9TK0W/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_3?pf_rd_p=1944687682&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00GY1SCW2&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=12AXEXM23J727AXG8Z74

It had a silicone sleeve that sat inside the entire cone and yes seemed to help with suction over the Medela. Not sure how this new one compares.

@Foodnerd81: A bit, but it was more just pumping really quickly at first to stimulate letdown from what I remember.

I initially bought the Medela Harmony because it seemed like everyone recommended that one, but I had pretty much NO luck with it. Surprisingly, I found the cheap Lansinoh one from Walmart worked just as well as my electric (and usually faster, too).

@Mrs. Yoyo: that one has a silicone collar right? That's what the purple is? That's part of the reason the NUK is interesting to me, it seems like suction would be so much better if it wasn't just plastic.

@Mrs. Yoyo: @delight: did you massage the breast while
Pumping or anything? Or just squeeze the pump while holding it up to your breast, nothing special? I just felt like I was doing something wrong since I usually get a decent amount with my PIS.

Lansinoh worked far better than the Medela in my experience. I actually almost never used my electric because I liked it so much.

I really liked having a manual pump for times that I was engorged but didn't want to drag out the full PISA. I had the medela and I didn't love it(wasn't comfortable for my hands..) but it was really nice having the same parts/bottles for everything.

I'm interested in this. I got a medela Harmony through my insurance since I already had the pump in style. Used it today and was thoroughly unimpressed but I'm wondering if it was user error or something. It is handy that is uses the same parts since I use a bigger flange than it came with.

I am due in a little over 4 weeks  with LO 2 and am trying to finish up some shopping. I have a PISA electric, but thought that this time around it would be handy to have a manual pump for the occasional night time/on the go session.

I am kind of going between the medela manual, since it works with the same parts as my electric, and the NUK manual... We used nuk bottles with lo 1 so I thought that might be a good one to try. There is like a $20 price difference between the two and I'm just not sure if the expense is worth it for the medela.

So, after my rambling, I guess my questions are...
Do you have either and have some feedback? Or can you recommend your favorite manual pump?
