The PA law goes into effect Aug. 14 (60 days from when it was signed) and they're only issuing verbal warnings for the first year.

PA just passed a new law requiring RF until age 2 within the past couple of weeks.

I was thinking of the same thing - switch from RF to FF and back again during a cross-country road trip?!

@SweetCaroline: I was thinking of that comparison too (drinking age). Not quite the same thing but same concept.

@Foodnerd81: @PinkElephant: friends of ours had a FF over 1 year but not quite 2 years when the law in our state changed. They had to RF her again and it was not fun!

Reminds me (very loosely!) when my parents were between 18-21, the drinking age changed from 18 years to 21 years. They went to being legal drinkers to underage drinkers.

@avivoca: Interesting! I'd assume you'd really have to irritate an officer who pulled you over before they'd go after you for this, but it's worth considering! :)

Doesn't matter for us, since DD2 is past two and will rear face as long as she keeps sleeping for most of our car trips in that position! :) But would definitely be a pain to have to consider if you turned a not-yet-two year old around in good conscience for a good reason (I know people who have done it to help with severe motion sickness).

@Foodnerd81: I feel in like the situation you described (while equally frustrating and annoying!), if you're a driver in the state of NJ, the official answer would be that you're probably obligated to know the law and switch your child back....what a headache, though!

@PinkElephant: Technically, yes, you could get in trouble. Just like if you broke another rule of the road that might be legal in your state.

@PinkElephant: I wondered the same thing. Not sure. Another question I saw raised when NJ changed their law was what if your kid was already FF when they made the law, but under 2?

Does it come down to where you are driving (physically) at the moment, or where your car is registered?

Just thinking, since we often drive through multiple states...makes me wonder if (hypothetically) one could technically get in trouble for having a not yet two year old turned FF if it that is permissible where the vehicle is from, but not where it was stopped.

In my, the required age is RF until one year AND 20 pounds, but the official recommendation is to RF until two and thirty pounds.

Apparently only Nj, Oklahoma, and California, require RF until 2. I don't think anyplace requires it until 3. I believe it's a federal law to RF until one but I could be wrong on that.
http://www.ghsa.org/html/stateinfo/laws/childsafety_laws.html

Eta and Pennsylvania is RF until 2.

@DesertDreams88: not a map, but they've listed all the states and you have to click on each state to find out the specific info:

Does anyone have a map or list of which states mandate rearfacing until 1, 2, or 3? Tried Google, no success but I didn't try long. Distracting baby :)

If no map or list, which require until at least age 2?
