@Espion: If it helps at all, I remember reading a quote that said something along the lines of there being a difference between hunger and starvation - hunger is good and is what keeps baby nursing during growth spurts.

Also, milk supply is naturally lower towards the end of the day but is higher in fat and calories to compensate for the lower volume / slower flow.

@birdofafeather: Sorry :) I just mean it feels like my boobs are totally empty.

@bpcmarj: @QueensBee: @Navy_Mommy: @Kemma: @BabyBoecksMom: @brownie: Thank you, ladies. I just worried because he was completely flipping out. And I know he was hungry, because he sucked down 3 ounces of formula. He has plenty of wet diapers, but I can't help feeling concerned about my supply, because although I can express milk far more readily than in the beginning, I obviously didn't have enough to satiate him over the course of an entire day.

Am I the only one that doesn't know what floated the keg means?

But back to the topic is that it's totally normal that you feel empty after he's been nursing a ton. Go by the wet diapers, keep putting him to the boob and get yourself a break when you need it! Good job mama. Hang in there!!

I feel this way every day, so no advice, just commiseration. I've been relying on the amount of diapers and not supplementing, but I feel so empty by the afternoon.

At 2 weeks we were pretty much constantly nursing. And, I do think that's right at the first growth spurt! Grab a water bottle and a snack, hole up on the couch and watch netflix and murse, nurse, nurse. The beauty of the supply and demand system :)

I went through a very similar situation at the beginning. My pediatrician encouraged me to do an ounce or two of formula, if I felt he needed it. She reminded me to trust my instincts. Even with an ounce or two of formula each day, I ended up with an oversupply from the constant sucking (oh, the irony!). It finally evened out around 3 weeks and now we are just right.

I think you are doing a great job with trusting your instincts! It may be a winding path, but your body will get where it needs to be.

Totally normal. And even if YOU can't get anything out, they can. Your milk ducts go all the way up into your arm pits.

Sounds like your right in the thick of the first of many growth spurts! It's the constant nursing and cluster feeding that cues the body to increase supply and providing latch is comfortable for you and your LO is having plenty of wet and dirty diapers then you're both doing fine!

Also at such a young age your LO only has a wee tummy so needs small frequent feeds rather than multiple ounces at once. He's probably also sucking for comfort and because being at your breast is his favourite place right now :-)

Hang in there mama, you're doing a wonderful job and this too shall pass!

Yes, it takes a few days. But for my sanity, I gave one bottle at night so I could get a break and make sure she got full.

Yes, they do help boost the supply. I wouldn't wait it out more than 2 or 3 days at most if he is acting starving. But it can take up to 3 days to up your supply.

After a rocky early start for various reasons, I feel like the last couple of days have brought significant improvements in breast feeding and supply. (E is two weeks old today.)

BUT, he has been nursing every 1.5 to 2 hours around the clock yesterday and today. I know that can be normal, but this evening I feel like he's floated the keg. I haven't pumped in 3 days because he is eating so frequently. And now, he's been attached to the boob for the last 2 hours continuously. He'll de-latch, act completely frantic that he's not latched, latch, and suck like he's been starving for a month. (Repeat times a trillion.)

I can still hand express some milk, but I feel like he isn't getting what he wants, because both sides are *so* soft, they don't even feel like they normally did pre-pregnancy.

I weighed him, confirmed that he wasn't getting any significant volume, cracked, and now my mother is giving him a bottle of formula we had left over.

So, permit me a SIGH. For those EBF'ing mamas, did these marathon nursing sessions take a couple days to increase supply? Should I have stuck it out with a screaming baby? I'm praying that he takes a longer than one hour nap to give me a fighting chance to refill the tanks...
