@Raindrop: At my company, you are entitled to just your 12 weeks of FMLA. Sure, you can come back sooner, but you can't stay out longer if you want! So there's a lack of choice there. Also, I'd guess the majority of families can't really afford to stay out on maternity leave for as long as they'd like, so again, no choice.

@Adira: I don't understand. That is still a choice! :) Weather you take all of it or part of it... or maybe supplement it with some vacation time to make it longer.

I guess I'm lucky I'm in California and there is just so many combinations for maternity leave. We are still behind most of the world though it seems.

@Herrade: The whole premise of her opinion piece starts with this:

"As far as I'm concerned, the length of your maternity and paternity leave are deeply personal choices."

It's not really a choice for most of us. We get 12 weeks (or less), whether we like it or not. :bummed:

The CNN piece is notable to me because it seems to assume a) that every woman has the resources MM does when making decisions about family leave and b) that the double standard on family leave for men and women is ok, when in fact it's at the root of the problem.

Wow, i didn't know this: "Under Mayer's leadership, [Yahoo] has instituted a 16-week paid maternity policy and eight-week paid paternity policy for employees."

So that's awesome! Certainly more than most of our companies have done for us.

@MrsSCB: I know, it's awful. Way to 1) not have a basic understanding of feminism, and 2) propagate shitty stereotypes. Also, this is a woman who took two weeks of leave after having a baby and she doesn't think she has "militant drive"???

@ms.line: You inspired me to look up her comments regarding feminism, and this made me want to bang my head against the wall:

"I don’t think that I would consider myself a feminist. I think that, I certainly believe in equal rights."

Then there's this...

"I don’t, I think, have sort of the militant drive and sort of the chip on the shoulder that sometimes comes with that. And I think it’s too bad, but I do think feminism has become, in many ways, a more negative word."

I just.... ugh. :meh:

@ms.line: I agree completely. I think her rather blasé comments about refusing maternity leave are quite damaging to the rest of us, who struggle with our limited childcare and work options. There's a difference between choosing to overburden yourself (even with an army of domestic labor) and being forced too. Sadly, most people won't get that. Whether she likes it or not, MM sets a powerful example, and she should at least be aware of that and be clear about all the resources that enable her choice.

@Mrs. Tiger: I'll admit the thought of nicu babies didn't cross my mind until I was in the hospital. I know of pre-term labor and the additional complications of having multiples but I guess I saw or believed that having a normal uncomplicated twin pregnancy was more common. I don't know if that is good or bad thing about expectations of a twin pregnancy.

@LuLu Mom: Yeah, I had to refresh my memory on her history. She only took 2 weeks off after having her son and she got rid of working remotely. She's is showing others that it is possible to have a family and be an executive but taking 2 weeks off does set harder expectations of other moms. As for the working from home part, it does suck that she got rid of it but I also don't work in to tech industry. I am able to work from home and for me, I work more efficiently at the office than at home. But I am grateful that my boss allows us to work from home if needed. So I like the option being there.

I do hope that she takes more time off after having twins. Also, if she does have nicu babies that she takes additional time off. That is something that was difficult for me to wrap my head around that after 6-8 weeks of paid mat leave that there is a chance that the babies may be in the nicu for some of that time and that I might not have as much time as full term babies and mothers might have to bond. I have heard of mothers going back to work while the baby (or babies) are in the nicu but then taking time off when they come home. I don't have any issues with working while the babies are in the nicu (if capable... I considered it but won't do it) but I would hope that she takes some time off when the babies leave hospital.

I look at her from both directions, as a women in the search engine industry myself, I look up to the fact that she appears to have it all. A highly public corporate job in an industry dominated by men while taking time to have a family. She's not letting her career rule her private life, which is incredible to look up too.

However, I do think that by being so public about "hey I'm having a baby (or 2 in this case) and going right back to work makes me ASSUME (she's never said) that she doesn't think longer maternity leaves are necessary. Now, as a woman in her public position I wish she would voice how important the balance is between work and family and show that she's a fighter for women's rights and how it's ridiculous that we in the US do not have paid maternity leave.

I am impressed with her CEO status and I do not judge her parenting (I'm too busy judging myself.) However, as a woman and mom in the tech industry, I'd love to see her take a long or at least average leave. After my maternity leave, I expected to jump right back in at the same level and was really surprised by how I was treated by some colleagues, like I had taken some extended vacation.

I know that having twins doesn't neccesarily mean she'll have to slow down. There's plenty of us mothers with multiples that go full term and have no complications. We are told that we might have complications though. I was told this same info and my Dr thought I would likely have an uncomplicated pregnancy. I could have seen an MFM but my Dr said it was up to me. My Dr didn't seem to think I was high risk and so I just saw my her (my OB) and only saw the MFM after being in the hospital for HG and now for PPROM.
With that said, I did have complications and was put on hospital bed rest for PPROM. It did surprise me but it is a risk of carrying multiples. I went with the flow and adapted.

Maybe Marissa is trying to be (& remain) positive (which I understand, as someone who sometimes considers myself a workaholic. Oh, I'm also the breadwinner in the family.), but I can see how saying this publicly might be putting too much stress on herself. I'm not a CEO so my job can be flexible and I don't have a ton a work stress. I have no idea what types of pressures and decisions she has to make.

Oh, I'm having fraternal twins (di/di), but I'm told identical twins have additional risks like TTTS and possibility of their cords being tangled. There might be other risks as well that I am not aware of.

I hoping she has an healthy, normal and uncomplicated pregnancy. I'm sure if she has complications, that it show how unpredictable pregnancies can be and maybe shine some light on the the maternity leave situation here in the US.

@ms.line: Ah, gotcha.

@agold: Even if they share a sac, I believe they aren't definitively identical, but I could be wrong. There are a couple ways she would know if they split during IVF, I guess. One is if they knew the embryo split and chose to implant both (I do think someone here knew that an egg split while it was being watched by embryology but I can't remember who now!). I think it's more common for an egg to split after its already transfered. So you transfer one and come to find out you're pregnant with twins, for instance. I know that happens with some frequency. Some think the process of assisted hatching increases that risk. If you have same sex twins you can go through DNA testing after birth to determine if they are id or fraternal. Or you can wait to see if they look different!

Good for her if it's what she wants. She's definitely biting off a chunk, lol. And I do hope she doesn't expect all her employees to necessarily follow suit, because the "if I can do it, you can do it" mentality behooves nobody. But it's not like I've seen anything to indicate that IS what she's thinking. I think we women peon employees get nervous when the CEOs are very career focused because we worry policies will trickle down to us that we don't like

@jetsa: I want to be clear that I'm not criticizing her choice and even though I decided to stay at home with my twins, I honestly don't care whenever anyone else chooses to return to work, if ever. My concern is for her from one twin mom to another. She is in for a big adventure. I hope she will be kind to her body (which goes through a lot in a twin pregnancy and delivery) and her own mind (which may experience levels of sleep deprivation, even higher hormone fluctuations, and more stress trying to balance three little ones) in the time after her twins arrive. She's put an enormous amount of pressure on herself announcing that she intends to stick with the post partum schedule/timeline she had with her son. I hope she can be kind to herself if she finds the reality does not live up to her expectations and not feel like a failure.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Yeah, I'm glad she's having kids, and I agree she shouldn't be punished for outsourcing her domestic labor, as basically all male CEOs have done before her. However, I think there is already a tremendous amount of pressure on working moms, and Mayer sets the bar even higher. I'd really like to see her publicly acknowledge the domestic workforce that enables her to hold such a high profile position while having a young family.

@twodoghouse: Yes, but I believe her office nursery was only for her son and included personal nannies.

I'm just happy as a female executive she's taken the time to have children. Growing up many of my mom's contemporaries climbing the corporate ladder did so without a family. They felt a family would impede their success. Wether she spends quality time with them from the beginning doesn't matter to me. The male executives have wives and help, so why shouldn't she have a village?
