I really need to look into this for my girl. She needs an individual sport at her current stage as she gets disappointed easily. I think the discipline/obedience would be a good thing for her.

@Myicitygirl: Thank you, that's helpful. I was considering a family class in taekwondo, I think my son might be more apt to participate if I were there for now. Then we can assess later.

I would also ask any parents waiting for their kids how they like the studio. That's how I confirmed the other kids liked the instructors.

My 5 year old son recently started taekwondo. I wanted this discipline because he is half Korean, but also because taekwondo emphasizes control and focus and form, and there was a study that showed that at-risk kids who were taught taekwondo showed improvement in self control compared to other at-risk kids who were taught MMA-style techniques.

I would visit a couple of studios and watch the class for your child's age. Is the instructor patient and attentive, or more aggressive and strict? I passed over the studio 4 minutes from my house because I thought the owner/instructor was too aggressive. The studio I chose is a 15-20 minute drive away, but the classes are popular and the students and parents love the instructors, who are warm and attentive and emphasize obedience and attention.

Anyone have their child enrolled in a martial arts program? I am thinking about enrolling my son but I know nothing, other than the names of a few disciplines.

What should I be looking for in a program/studio?

Thanks!
