I live in the northeast, masks are required for preschool age classes at my LO's daycare, so roughly age 3 and up. I haven't heard any major issues with compliance - they get mask breaks for socially distanced meals/snacks and outdoor time.

My kiddo is an oddball and LOVES wearing her masks. We actually have to beg her to take them off when she gets home.

3.5 in NY suburb; mask is encouraged but not required. I will be sending mine in with but won't have much expectations. I've witnessed her ability to wear a mask for probably 20-30 min at a time, but if she yanks it off I probably will tell the teacher to just leave it and just put it back on when coming out for pick up.

My kids are actually switching to a new school soon (not related to masks, haha, it's so they can be at the same daycare). My son is the only one of my kids old enough to wear a mask. His current daycare, which has been open the whole time, asked us to bring a mask to keep at school, but they haven't been required to wear them all day. However, the school just sent out an email last week that said they plan to try to encourage the kids to wear them more. A couple times that I've picked up my son he's been wearing his. He doesn't really seem to mind much. The staff wear masks, and parents are required to for drop off and pick up.

At their new school, staff will wear masks and face shields, I believe. And parents and kids are supposed to wear masks during drop off and pick up, but the kids will not have to wear them in classrooms.

I’m in the SF Bay Area and schools here are supposed to encourage mask wearing when feasible in anyone over age 2. But, my understanding is many schools only require on pick up/drop off since the language is so loose. My 2.5 year old is going to be starting forest preschool (so completely outside) and only teachers will wear masks. But I kind of want her to try one anyway even though it’s outside (and she’s never kept one on more than 5 minutes ever). :bummed:

@Becky: We're in NYC, and my daughter's preschool will require masks for everyone (all the kids are 2+) all day except while they're eating. I'm glad about it. My kids are used to wearing masks by now - they're in them whenever we're outside, including when they're running around playing in the park, so they have pretty good tolerance for long mask-wearing.

I’m in Texas, so not exactly a role model, but an interesting data point. Here the masks orders only apply to ages 10 and over. I think the public schools are requiring masks for 4th grade and up. At our daycare only staff wear masks.

@Becky: Yes the line between daycare and school makes no sense. My son is also four and his preschool requires makes on kids but his old daycare - which he could still be enrolled in for another year - does not.

Philly suburbs here, my 4yo is masked at daycare. He and his classmates do great with it according to all reports from the staff. Kids 2yo and up are following this guidance. They remove masks for nap time and during outdoor play.

The city I live in 2+ are supposed to wear masks in indoor public places but not daycares and in schools not until grade 4.

If my kids had to wear masks all day I wouldn’t be sending them to daycare or school.

We're in NYC. Our kids' school has both a child care and an elementary school, and for kids 2-5, they have to wear a mask in "public" areas--anywhere outside the classroom, including hallways or play areas. Within the classroom, they can take them off, though I've heard in the prek classes, the teachers don't always tell the kids to take them off so they don't necessarily take them off. For kindergarten up, they have to wear masks except when eating/drinking

@Becky: We're in NJ. Masks are recommended for kids at day care but not required. My kids (5 and 7) have been at our day care all summer for camp and I made sure their teachers knew I wanted them wearing masks all day (other than eating or outside time). At the beginning of the summer there were other kids wearing them but I've seen most of that drop off. They claim they are the only ones wearing them all day now, but they're fine with it and don't complain.

I'm in CA and children 2 and over are supposed to wear a mask. I think it's ridiculous to require kids under the age of 6 to wear one. My 8 year old can't even wear it without messing with it (which defeats the whole purpose).

That being said, my 3.5 year old has been back at daycare since July 1 and only kids over the age of 6 (which they really don't have any as it only goes through preschool) and adults are required to wear a mask. I just can't imagine him being there all day and having to deal with a mask.

I have had him wear one at the grocery store and he did pretty well with it, but that was only for around 30 minutes. Not an 8 hour day.

So NY requires people 2 and older to wear a mask...but apparently not at daycare? It’s so confusing. Any NY Bees out there?

My sons been at his daycare/preschool since COVID started minus a two week break in the very beginning. The teachers wear masks or face shields and the kids do not. My state requires kids 5 and older to wear a mask.

Kiddos entering kindergarten and older are required to wear a mask as they are required to wear one at school (the center's rule, not the state's). My understanding is that it is counterproductive to constantly be adjusting/putting back on masks of kids too little to put the mask on by themselves but old enough to take it off by themselves. Teachers touching everyone's masks kind of renders the masks useless.

I was surprised to learn that children are not required to wear face masks at childcare centers where I live (Western NY) even if they are over 2. I put feelers out on my local moms Facebook group after learning this and every parent responding said only the staff are required to wear them, that none of the kids wear them, and that there haven’t been any COVID cases (represented about 8 different daycares all over our county).

My daughter is 4 and my plan was to have her wear a mask (I go back to work 9/8). Without the structure of actual schools where mask breaks are part of the day, and being the only one wearing a mask, I’m wondering how this will go...

Does your daycare (or preschool) require kids to wear masks?

Does your 4 y/o tolerate wearing a mask well?

Do you think it’s weird/odd that if my town had a universal pre-k program, a 4K program, or preschool in the elementary school she’d be required to wear a mask?

Really torn as we love our daycare and really don’t have any other options...
