I'm a massage fiend but I didn't get a massage during he first tri. I'm sure it's fine but if something went wrong, I would have always wondered if it was caused by the massage. I started getting prenatal massages regularly around 15 weeks.

Thanks everyone. I'd read the avoid in first trimester, but couldn't find much reasoning for it (a bit about increased blood volume, but then also found that doesn't really start until 6-8 weeks). I'm still a bit torn between not wanting to do anything 'wrong' and also just not understanding what could go wrong. I guess I should call around and see who'll take me.

At 5 weeks I think I'd probably just get one. Up to you if you want to disclose and potentially be turned away. I don't think there's a medical reason to not get one-just spas worried about liability. But at 5 weeks a baby is so teeny tiny I don't know what could actually be affected?

Every spa/massage place that I've been to won't do massage in first trimester Once, I disclosed I was 11 weeks and they even refused.

No experience from the 1st trimester, but I had a few regular massages while on holiday in southeast asia at around 15 weeks. I could still comfortably lie in all positions, and asked that the masseuse not put hard pressure on my lower back. I didn't even realize there were 1st trimester restrictions - I might have made a different choice if I had known that, but everything turned out fine.

I had massages both times, but they were from prenatal certified lmt's. Easy to find, just ask!

I got massages the whole time I was pregnant but they were therapeutic at my Chiros office with my regular massage therapist not relaxing spa massages.

I got a massage when I was 6 weeks. I just made sure to tell my massage therapist and she was totally fine with it.

Here RMTs will absolutely treat in the first trimester, but there is a lot more training involved before certification than anywhere in the states. No deep low back work, but other than that it's a go. I'm 7 weeks and I wouldn't hesitate to get a massage.

From what I understand, masseurs won't give you a massage in the first trimester. That being said, I think it's mainly a liability issue - if something happens to the pregnancy they don't want there to be any chance that they were involved. I got a massage at 5 weeks (I didn't know) and it was fine but I would ask your doctor and if they say it's ok don't tell the massage place.

Heard the same @travellingbee:. I had a celebratory spa day planned with my mom when I was 6-7 weeks pregnant and the spa refused service. When you start getting them again you will want to a prenatal masseuse. My doula put me in touch with one that came to my house. It was lovely.

Does soaking in a tub relieve some pain for you?

I've had back/shoulder pain for years, made worse by sitting at a computer all day at work. I've been getting regular (approx every 4-6 weeks) massages for a while. I'm only 5 weeks today, so not uncomfortable lying down or anything, and wondering if I need to go to a specialist massage therapist already or can get one last 'normal' massage. I'm seeing my doctor on Monday and can double check then, but I'm really sore and was hoping to get one this weekend.
Any advice?
