@Jumpingjacks: Maybe try a chair massage for 1/2 an hour? A lot of places here have the funky chairs you sit forward in and they massage your neck and back.

@Jumpingjacks: Just be careful about too much heat. My OB was OK with some use of a heating pad but she told me to stay on a medium setting and no longer than 10 minutes. It's probably fine to do more on your neck but I was using it on my lower back so because of the proximity to baby she wanted me to be careful.

Also... consider talking to your OB about referring you to a physical therapist. I started PT around 11 weeks and I don't know why I waited so long! It has a been a big help to me, and insurance totally covers it!

I tried to get one in the first trimester too and the spa couldnt do it. More for liability reasons than anything. They dont want to get sued if you miscarry and there is the possibility of blaming it on them.

@Jumpingjacks: I got a really horrible neck spasm and couldn't move for three days straight. This was post 1st trimester so I did get a massage which helped, but the thing that helped the most were some stretches that the massage therapist showed me (he specialized in injuries) and lots of heat from those Thermacare heat packs.

Thanks. You know, I'm going to try more heat, stretching and ice on my neck for a day or two and if it's still bad, I'll just get a massage on my neck and shoulders, gently. Then wait it out.

I've heard the stuff about pressure points in the first trimester as well, but I'm sure if you go to a place that's experienced in prenatal massage you should be fine.

My Hubs got me one for my birthday, when I was 7 weeks, and it felt wonderful! He made sure that there was somebody there who could do prenatal, and I made sure to remind the masseuse that I was pregnant. She was very careful with my lower back, didn't touch my stomach (except to pat it and say that we'll be careful for baby), and avoided my ankles.
If you can, do it!

Many massage places actually won't do them until the second trimester. I heard certain pressure points have been linked to a risk of miscarriage and that's why they recommend against massage in the first trimester. I opted to be safe rather than sorry and I will be getting my first prenatal massage this weekend at 15 weeks.

However my sister in law told me that her BFF who is an MD got a massage with her at 10 weeks pregnant, so obviously some people, even doctor people, don't worry about this.

Anytime I've inquired about one on a message board, or wherever, I always get the advice that I need to wait until the second trimester. I haven't checked with my doctor though. If your doctor says it is okay, then that would be good enough for me.

Has anyone gotten a massage in your first trimester? Or not gotten one because you were pregnant? Any specific factors you would share that affected your decision? Was it a big deal to you or no?

I regularly get massages as I have regular neck and back pain from a previous injury. My doc said it's o.k. to get a massage (I'm at nearly 7 weeks), but I just don't know. My neck and back are killing me at the moment. Should I just go and ask for a gentle one?
