I had a really bad clogged duct close to lo's first birthday! Other than massaging/feeding on that side first etc make sure you are drinking lots of water, essentially to water down the milk so it is less sticky. And if you can stomach it, add some raw garlic to meals to help prevent infection.

Always start on that side for now as they eat more. I got the Lansinoh warming thingy (it's purple and has little round balls inside?) that you can wrap around your boob while nursing and massage while nursing. It sounds impossible but with some adjusting you can do it. I hope you can work it out before it gets worse. I had mastitis once with my youngest and it was the worst feeling, ever! As for how old? I think mine happened when my youngest decided to drop his MOTN session so it wasn't an age thing for me. I immediately started waking him up to nurse him at 4AM every night until he weaned. Never had a problem doing that with both of my boys. They immediately went back to sleep.

@MamaBehr: heating pad before feeds and massage the clogged spot while nursing. It could have something to do with how you are sleeping (sleeping on your side can put pressure on your breast) or wearing under wire bras or even a shoulder or messanger bag can cause clogged ducts.

If it keeps happening I know some women take soy lecithin to avoid plugs.

@MamaBehr: I didn't either! That's how it got so bad. I let it go because I assumed there was no way it could be mastitis so long after the fact. Even my OBGYN didn't know what it was. I eventually went to a breast specialist and he diagnosed it as mastitis.

@MamaBehr: Mine hurt for a good 2-3 days but mastitis never came from the clogged duct, and I got them 3-4 times I think.

I only had mastitis once...and it was eight months AFTER I stopped nursing. It was so bad it turned into cellulitis and they had to schedule emergency surgery.

@Bao: I've massaged and done a hot shower. I've nursed so his chin is on the clog, and it still hurts! I so don't have the ability to get sick now (DH is in Africa until next Friday and I have no family around and THREE kids. Gah!)

I don't remember how old was the oldest, but as far as clearing up the clogged ducts a heating pad really helped. Also massaging during nursing, and making sure I didn't skip that side at all.

I had mastitis while nursing my second when he was little (like less than two weeks old), but I have a nasty clogged duct that I don't want to turn into mastitis. So this is a two parter:
1. What worked for your clogged ducts?
2. What was the oldest your LO was when you got mastitis?
My nurseling is almost 11 months old! I thought he was too old for this nonsense!
