@2littlepumpkins: this sounds awful, good to know it doesn't necessarily come with diarrhea.

@DesertDreams88: ugh, that's bad - no, no medical facilities besides that, so hopefully that's a good sign...

@2littlepumpkins: @periwinklebee: I def could be wrong, I don't remember the lead up to c diff, I just remember the 5 weeks of having it. It was intense, painful urgency and there was definitely blood. I was on the verge of going to the ER twice which is saying a lot bc the ER costs me at least $1000 everyone I go.

I think c diff is mainly contracted in medical facilities. I always thought I picked it up at the urgent care that prescribed me the original course of antibiotics. Have you been to a medical facility other than the hospital 2 months ago and your ob a couple weeks ago?

@DesertDreams88: I managed to have it for weeks with no diarrhea. My dr only tested because I insisted something was wrong (stomach was "off" and fever was coming and going.) Not necessarily common but it can happen! :( The worst symptom for me was the pain. It really really hurt.

@periwinklebee: I think you would definitely know if you had c-diff, its pretty extreme. If it's the standard stomach ache I think would just be the norm after antibiotics.

@DesertDreams88: Maybe this is a tmi question given the nature of the infection, but how did you know that you had c diff? I discontinued antibiotic use a few days ago but have been having horrible stomach aches since then every time I eat (despite the probiotics). I feel awful. My stool was loser initially but is now back to normal, so I'm not sure it can be c diff from the online description.... versus just a normal disruption from the antibiotic that I have to get through. I was already getting stomachaches periodically, i think due to sleep deprivation, but this is a whole other level...

Chiming in to agree on the probiotics!!

When I took antibiotics back in 2011, it cleared all my gut flora so then I was suspectible to another infection, which I got, and it was C Diff.... literally sh*tty. My drs THEN told me to always take a probiotic with an antibiotic, spacing out the doses.

For the original question, I was luckily, my fever cleared in a day. Also I took Tylenol every 4 hours religiously.

@periwinklebee: I was using regular probiotics or eating yogurt, but honestly, I always ask for a Rx for diflucan (which is an anti-fungal). You don't have to take it if you don't want to, but its nice to have on hand. I was basically like "ITS MASTITIS, IM DYING, PUT ANTIBIOTICS AND DIFLUCAN ORDERS IN, I DON'T HAVE TIME FOR THRUSH OR A YEAST INFECTION WITH A NEWBORN KTHNXBAI."

@periwinklebee: My fever spiked right as I left work. I felt bad all day long but as soon as I was leaving, it spiked and I had to drive to get the kids, run through CFA for dinner, and then go home. Once I changed at home, I saw the streaking and knew what it was. My friend drove over to stay with the kids while I went to the pharmacy (mine won't release medication unless it's to the prescribed person or a family member) and we just watched TV until bedtime.

After I posted this, my fever spiked to 103 and I spent the day lying in bed pretty much unable to move, trying to keep the baby entertained. Thank goodness he was having a pretty happy day. And the pharmacy is only about 100 yards away, given that we were in the middle of a blizzard. Not 100% but my fever is much better now.

@Dahlia: @gingerbebe: @LBee: @maddyz: I hadn't even thought about thrush, ugh, that would suck. Did you use a particular type of probiotics? When I read this, I started guzzling the kombucha but will definitely get a supplement as well.

@avivoca: Ugh, it has been bad enough solo parenting just the baby, if I have another kid, I don't know how I would handle situations like this.

@MamaBear87: @Littlebit7: @bhbee: Thank you! My fever has gone down and definitely feeling somewhat better.

I felt very quick relief with the antibiotics, like hours. The first time my fever broke overnight before getting them. The second time I started taking them before my fever got very hight. Both times I left better the next day. I've been on Diflucan a few times for thrush that wouldn't go away and I find the side effects really hard to deal with.... I would take LOTS of probiotics and drink so much water before i would take diflucan preventively.... but that's just because i know how nauseous it made me.

I felt better within 24 hours of starting antibiotics. No side effects, although I did take a probiotic and ate a lot of yogurt. Definitely get the antibiotics if you have mastitis, it's no joke. I felt fine when I left the house that morning and was so feverish I was almost passing out by the time I got to work 30 minutes later. I had to call DH to get me and take me straight to the doctor.

I was feeling better within 2 days. Tell your doctor you want Diflucan to prevent thrush - not only because it sucks for you but treating a baby with thrush is so annoying.

Pump when you can and scrub your nipples well and use a heating pad on your boobs in bed.

Hugs.

I got mastitis when I weaned. It was a great goodbye gift.

Antibiotics worked in about 24 hours to break my fever and I was back to normal in about 2 days. I slept for pretty much the entire first day once I got the fever. My husband had to feed me. It was bad.

I would get a probiotic ASAP. You don't want to end up with thrush on top of mastitis.

Ugh so sorry. Mastitis is the worst. I remember I already felt like shit due to sleep deprivation and then I all of a sudden felt like a truck hit me. But the antibiotics kicked in within 8 hours if I recall.
I called my sitter and had her come the next day...I slept for 5 hours in the morning and I’m not a napper.

For me, it took about two days for the fever to subside and I was sore for another couple of days. It might have been better if I had been able to rest, but I was solo-parenting two children and still needed to take them to school/care for them when they were home.

How long did it take to feel better once started on antibiotics? Any side effects of the antibiotics?

It's been a rough and sleepless week with LO - maybe a wonder week or a relapse of reflux. Now I have a fever/chills and have had several clogged ducts over the past few days despite being religious about the sunflower lecithin and working them out, so I think mastitis is the most likely culprit. Ugh, I was so looking forward to breastfeeding getting easier once we got past the six week mark... hopefully we'll get there eventually.
