Not sure about the mastitis but as for the jaundice, definitely feed on demand, if she's a good eater the jaundice will clear up from her natural feeding schedule. My dr. Told me me to look for 6 - 7 wet diapers and approx 4 poopy.

Your LO is probably a bit little for dangle nursing but can you maybe do some hand expressing in the "dangle" position? Or can you try a football hold to improve the latch?

(Edited for typos!)

Ugh- I still have the plugged duct- it's better, even the ped said, but its still a hard umpy spot. I've done heat a couple of times a day- though not constant- always starting her on that side, massaging it down towards the nipple while nursing and in the shower, and its still there. Any other advice? I think our latch is not as good on that side but I can't seem to get it better.

I got the chills tonight- prob from being in an sc vent topless- and freaked out that it was turning to mastitis.

Congrats mama! I would take the antibiotics--I waited and over the course of a day developed a high fever and felt like crap. It comes on fast. In order to avoid thrush I would also start taking a probiotic.

As for getting her to keep nursing I agree ith starting on the affected side. And do compressions while nursing. Don't worry abou being lopsided right now, you're so early in establishing supply that you can fix it later. Can't wait to hear about your LO!

@Foodnerd81: congrats!! Can't wait to hear your birth story! :)
This happened to me a few days in. If DS wasn't nursing as well on that side - it started to hurt like a m'fer and we were both new at the nursing thing - I would pump & compress that side like crazy until it felt totally empty, then slept on a heating pad.
I swear, if you can make it through childbirth & the newborn days, you can do anything! (Oh & thank goodness for HB!)

@Foodnerd81: aw totally girl, go do your thing (with your girl!) and BIL can see her after you're done!

Definitely have her nurse on the affected side (baby should probably empty you a lot better than a pump). If she's not emptying the one side, keep going with a pump. Just pump the other side if it's painfully engorged, and don't pump ALL the way. Just to the point of relief. Your supply might get a little lopsided but you can always even it out later.

I finally understand the big deal about too many visitors right away. Bil- who is great- is visiting and I was tryi g to feed with a blanket over me. Not worth it. We are in the nursery while Dh and bil eat dinner. I want him to see her but this is hungry time and we both need it!

I'll be trying the diaper trick tonight once baby girl is finally satisfied.

Any advice on balancing favoring the affected side with not neglecting the other?

Congratulations!! Another heat trick (besides the hot water diaper, that sounds great too!) is to fill a thick sock with rice, then microwave the rice-filled sock for 30 or 45 seconds or so. That holds the heat really well.

Also this page on Kellymom has great info on treatment that I found useful when I had 2 plugged ducts (which thankfully never turned into mastitis): http://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/mastitis/

I vote for get the antibiotics. Mastitis is no joke. The pain is one thing but the fever and chills are awful. Keeping my fingers crossed you don't get it.

@Foodnerd81: yes... you would absolutely know... worst 24 hours of my life HANDS DOWN! When the antibiotics kicked in I was still too weak/in pain to even stand up but it still felt like the sweetest relief ever!!

@mrs. wagon: thanks. That's a good point about having it on hand. Our pharmacy is closed now anyway but if it looks at all questionable tomorrow morning ill call and have them do that. The midwife mentioned that "I would KNOW" if it was full blown- I was like, well yeah but I'd like to avoid that!!

Absolutely avoid the antibiotic if you don't need it. Antibiotics can give you and your baby thrush. Even if it is mastitis you can get rid of it with nursing, pumping, massaging, etc. if you can clear the plug and keep the milk flowing.

BUT!

I would have them call in the prescription and pick it up from the pharmacy to have on hand JUST IN CASE it grows into full-blown mastitis. If this happens you can be TOTALLY. KNOCKED. OUT. I thought it was worse than childbirth. Seriously. The antibiotics start working really quickly so you'll want them asap and if it hits at night, it might take a while to get the nurse/doc on call on the phone.

Good luck!! Run HOT water in the inside of a diaper and use it as a hot compress-- stays hot a lot longer than anything else!!

AND CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

I'll post a whole birth story soon but short version- baby Foodnerd is a girl! Born Monday and we are doing well. She has a touch of jaundice that the ped is watching but right now we are just making sure she eats and poops a lot. At our appt today I mentions a reddish area on my right breast and she said it looks liked mastitis starting and to have my midwife call in an antibiotic ASAP. When I called the midwife she advised waiting since its just red and slightly tender but no fever, aches, etc., and to just feed baby as much as possible.

So two real questions here. 1) how would you deal with the conflicting advice? I prefer natural, avoiding meds whenever possible, but also want to do everything in my power to make breast feeding happen. 2) how do I get her to eat more? She's 4 days old and tends to cluster feed- 10-15 minutes on, with rubbing her feet, blowing in her face, to keep her up, break, repeat, for up to 2.5 hours but my breasts don't feel empty still. Milk is still coming in I'm sure but there's plenty in there for her now I think.

I'm happy things are going well so far but I really want to avoid full blown mastitis and kick this jaundice thing ASAP!
