Thinking back, I probably should have done more research on the different antibiotics. I'm allergic to penicillin which threw the doc off on which one to prescribe me. Turns out there are a few more that are preferred for mastitis and are safe to nurse on that isn't penicillin based. I could have avoided dumping if I was better informed. Oh well! I just finished the antibiotics yesterday and was able to nurse again by this afternoon. I wanted to make sure the meds were out of my system. And wow, pain free nursing and pumping has never felt so good! So so happy!!! </p> <p>Oh I kept track of my pumping output (or shall I say dumping output?) and ended up trashing over 225 ounces of milk while on the meds. The doc had warned me saying the antibiotics he prescribed, though safe for nursing, is not a very strong/good one. Two nights ago I started getting chills and really bad body aches, then a fever yesterday morning so I phoned into my doc who told me to go in right away. One look at my very red, hot left breast and the way I looked, he said my infection had come back with a vengeance. I'm now on a stronger antibiotic, which means I need to pump and dump. Can I just say how horrible it feels to have to dump away all that precious hard worked pumped liquid gold?!?!?!?!?! *cry* I just hope I have enough freezer stash to last me through the 10 day treatment.</p> <p>I hope the pain goes away soon... I had to go on antibiotics when I had mastitis but it got a lot better after that. Do you still have a fever?<br /> I was pretty weak for several days after starting antibiotics, me and baby did a lot of laying in bed and I took a lot of long hot showers and did a bit of massaging to get out the lump in my breast. Two weeks ago I started getting some tenderness in my left breast tissue. I thought it might be thrush so I upped my probiotic intake, but it didn't help and the pain got worst. I was hoping my body might fight the infection since I didn't want to start antibiotics (for fear for mastitis thrush cycle from killing off all tr good bacteria as well). The pain finally got unbearable last Monday and I went to see a doc, who diagnosed me with mastitis and prescribed an antibiotic that was safe for BF. The pain went away the next day and I continued on the meds. Yesterday (Saturday) around noon the pain came back with avengence!!! OMG it hurts so so so so bad. It's a pain deep within the tissue as well as around the nipple. I don't have any redness, but it does feel swollen even after I nurse or pump. No hard lumps though. Doctor last week also said that area felt warmer to the touch. Today the pain has escalated to even worst than before I started the antibiotics! I am spending mothers days curled up in the fetal position trying to work through the pain. And crying. I spoke with doctor just now (he called me back on day off - brownie points!) and he's afraid it might be a staphylococcal infection instead of the normal mastitis. He said my pain levels and possible ineffectiveness of the first antibiotic indicates the more serious infection. If it really is a staph infection, then I need to be placed on a different antibiotic which I have to pump/dump and it has a bunch of unpleasant side effects. </p> <p>Does anyone have any experience with this? I am so upset right now. </p>
