Just wanted to say that I feel for your pain! Hopefully the antibiotics kick in very soon.

I agree, maybe go every 3 hours to at night just so you get some rest.

I EP'ed for a year, and getting mastitis was the worse. Luckily it does get better, and you will get through this.

You should continue to pump every 2 hours but do make sure to get some sleep. The antibiotics will kick in, and you will feel much better. It'll just be like treating a clogged duct, which is easier without the feeling of being ill. Check to see if you have a milk blister.

http://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/nipplebleb/

I also noticed that a epsom salt soak helped with clogged ducts. I know this is a pretty stressful time, especially having to exclusively pump. Try to find time to relax and not focus so much on getting rid of your clog. Easier said than done, but it helped me so much when I was relaxed during my pump session. I can remember days when I would stress out during every pump session and finally just give up... and that's when the clog would clear.

If you want to wean from the pump, try to access your goals first. Again, I know this is difficult. You just want to throw that pump in the trash and call it a night. Think it over first. Do you want to pump a little and supplement? Do you want to quit all together? Either way, it is best to wean slowly. Drop sessions slowly to make sure you decrease your chances of getting a clogged duct. If you're engorged, make sure to pump a little to ease the pain. I don't recommend quitting cold turkey.

You'll feel like a normal person soon. Just trust that the antibiotics will kick in. For me it was quick. For others, it takes a little longer. Hope you feel better soon.

@char54: So sorry! I had mastitis once and it was awful. Im also prone to clogged ducts. Here's what I know...

Keep pumping. It will help clear the duct that's infected. If you stop pumping, you'll get engorged, which could end in mastitis in both breasts (which would be miserable!!) or even worse, an abscess.

I don't EP, but I think you'll want to slowly wean from pumping to avoid future clogged ducts/mastitis if you want to quit. I will say, I had a bunch of clogged ducts after mastitis, and I was so irritated with breastfeeding/pumping. Are you using a big enough flange? Mine was too small. I needed the 27 mm ones. Once I switched I didn't get any more plugged/clogged ducts! I'm glad I stuck with it.

Once the antibiotics kick in, you'll feel back to normal. Took about 36 hours for me. Lack of sleep can contribute to mastitis, so make sure you rest! Also keep using hot compresses on the sore area (a clean diaper filled with hot water retains heat well) and massage! Feel better :)

Oh, and here's some great info on mastitis: http://kellymom.com/bf/concerns/mother/mastitis/

Ohhh, honey! I had mastitis early on. Please give yourself a 3 hour stretch to sleep tonight. After that you can go back to every two hours. The antibiotics will help, but make sure you pick up a probiotic at the drugstore so that you don't get thrush! Hot compresses also helped me a ton when I had it. Hang in there! I hope you feel better soon!

I've been EPing dd since she was born almost 3 weeks ago. This morning I woke up very sore and engorged (strange since I've been dealing with low supply but I guess the domparadon and power pumping sessions finally caught up to me)

I pumped all day but the pain just got worse. By 5pm I was shaking uncontrollably with a fever that kept climbing. I could barely walk and felt the worst I have felt in a long long time. Dh took me to a walk in clinic where they gave me antibiotics and said its likely mastitis.

After an evening of pure hell, pumping every 2 hours while sick is zero fun, I am feeling mildly better, enough to write this post and seek advice:

My questions are:
1. How often should I pump if I want to continue pumping after this is all over? Will pumping every 2 hours not signal to my breasts to make more milk, aggravating the problem?

2. How often should I pump if I want to quit and switch to formula after this is over? I'm undecided at the moment and the pain may be clouding my decision making skills. I wish I could quit cold turkey at this very moment but the dr said that would make it worse and I have to pump through it

3. How long until I feel like a normal person again?

4. I've been pumping every 2 hours throughout the evening
And feel mildly better. Can I stretch it to 3 hrs at night? I need sleep so very badly.

Thanks in advance...any other hints or tips is also greatly appreciated!
