I thrifted a dresser for DS's nursery, bought a crib, and thrifted a night stand. The rocker in there came with our house. I hate matchy-matchy and I hate spending money (and wasting it by upgrading every few years). There are lots of ways to update a room through paint and details rather than by replacing furniture.

This is what we're doing. We're getting a white crib, and if it's a boy I want to try to find a nice midcentury dresser and if it's a girl, a French provincial that we can paint with yellow and white stripes :) Yes, I have all sorts of plans in my head. Anyway I figured with the white crib I don't have to worry about matching so much, and I despise buying new furniture so I buy all my case goods on Craigslist anyway. It's so much more satisfying!

@purrpletulips: Thanks for the perspective on the mirror. I'm contemplating leaving it off until we're done with diapers, but we'll have to see how stable it is.

Thanks ladies! I'm showing this to DH as soon as he gets home!

We don't exactly match either. Just think that your LO can use it forever instead of just a couple years when it is outgrown. Definitely not worth the extra $$ just because the words baby and nursery are associated with it!

We bought all the furniture from different places too. The crib is gray, we repurposed my dresser from childhood and it's white and bought a changing table off craigslist for $15 that is white. So ours definitely isn't matchy but I like it.

If we'd had a buffet style dresser I wouldn't have purchased a changing table either.

I bought baby furniture, however the dresser is one that will transition into her "big girl" dresser, it's not a changing table/ect. We did this on purpose, if baby #2 is here, we will leave it wtih the set and she will get ours and we will upgrade ;)

I'm not into matchy-matchy and I certainly don't see the point in spending a ton on nursery furniture. The only furniture in LOs room is a crib (white), a bookcase from Ikea (red), a rocking chair (light wood) and an Ikea dresser (dark brown).

DD's furniture did not match and I am fine with that, we did keep them in the same color family (various shades of brown). We bought the crib but her dresser and big girl bed were re-purposed from when DH was single.

As for having a mirror on the dresser, ours does and I found it a great thing because DD could look at herself while I changed her when little. Now that she is a toddler it isn't so nice because she's discovered that she can shake it plus she likes to "help" whenever she gets ahold of a wipe so it is pretty much a blurry mess.

I agree with @mrstiz about changing their room every 3 years. We went straight from crib to full sized bed for my son! hahaha. He loves his bed and I know that his bed will last him YEARS! :)

I think it's crazy to buy baby furniture actually, so i'm all for the craigslist dresser. Buying a changing table to me is silly because you can put a changing pad on a dresser that LO can use well into teenage-hood. The only baby furniture i'm buying is a crib. LO will have a grown up dresser & nothing themey. It's a smart way to save yourself from having to change their room every 3 years. Once LO can go into a toddler bed, they'll go to a twin size bed.

I don't tend to like matchy matchy furniture so I would say go with the less expensive dresser. I also tend to like more "adult" looking furniture than the super kiddie looking ones. But that's just me. I say save the extra $400+ and go with the less expensive one!

For those who considered or purchased furniture for your nursery that wasn't "baby" furniture, what factors led to your decision? Are you happy with your choice?

When I ordered LO's crib, I couldn't commit to spending $700+ on the matching dresser. I've been scouring craigslist, thrift stores, and consignment shops for a less expensive dresser option. I found something that looks promising on craigslist for $300. It's a real "big people" dresser that comes with a matching but removable mirror. There is plenty of room for a changing pad. The only downsides are that we will have to move it ourselves (*ahem, DH and a friend*), pay cash, and that it won't exactly match the crib. (I don't think color is a big deal, and it's a pretty close color anyways.) What would you do?
