@Cole: That's good news! It sounded so strange (I didn't read this before but would be very surprised to hear that the lab could refuse to run a lab test that had been ordered by a physician)

Well just in case anyone searches for this and comes across it I thought I would update. Turns out the doctor was misinformed. The lab only rejects it is your insurance rejects it and you haven't signed the paper saying you will pay out of pocket. I don't have the results yet but it looks like everything went out the way it should.

@Cole: we had an echogenic focus on the heart and bowel. both found at 20 weeks and the results of the test showed that both ended up being nothing

@littleredhairedgrl: Do you mind my asking what markers you had? I tried asking at my old gynecologists office but they use the same lab. I am not sure who else to reach out to.

@Cole: wow that's absurd! I had it done but I had a few markers so it was offered at our hospital and covered by our insurance, but I definitely don't think it should be refused to you if you are willing to pay.. is there any way they can go thru another lab?

@JoJoGirl: I agree, that's why I was wondering if anyone else had run into this. My doctor said she didn't think the small risk factor we have is enough for the lab to approve it and that the lab has refused to run the test on several other patients. It's terrible but I have half a mind to lie and make the risk factor bigger.

@Cole: What? That's crazy - can you call your insurance company or doc to confirm? Labs should under NO circumstances be making medical/diagnostic decisions.

After doing the research on our options my husband and I decided we would like to have a cell-free fetal dna test like Materniti21 done and skip the nuchal translucency screening. We knew going in that our insurance might not cover it but we were willing to pay out of pocket. Come to find out, the lab reserves the right to refuse to run the test if you don't have enough risk factors. I am appalled that the lab can simply refuse to run the test even though we are willing to pay and our doctor agrees it would be a good idea, not to mention the fact that the New England Journal of Medicine agrees it is a good idea. Has anyone else run into this? I don't even know how to get around it since all of the practices I am familiar with in the area use this lab.
