Yes to better access to daycare, especially on work sites! I think it's a two part solution of both mandating a certain amount of leave that is self funded and offering more high quality daycare, not just extending leaves.

@Tanjowen: see, that's super frustrating. There has to be a way they can make moms mlre comfortable with them. But I guess as full as most daycares are, it seems it's not a good money maker to invest the time. Seems smart to me (to invest the time)

On site work daycare would be amazing. My company has so few women, and the average employee is over 50, I can't even see them doing that. Sigh. Sounds awesome tnoigh

@ValentineMommy: It does suck. I had PP anxiety too, and I know it made it worse as the deadline approached.

@blackbird: I agree with you that it makes a world of difference. I think it's awesome you knew your caregiver and felt that way. I only received one meet and greet with the caregivers for LO, and while they were lovely, I didn't know them at all. I think they would have treated him awesome, but I had a hard time with it. If I could have afforded it, a nanny I interviewed and got to know better would have been my choice, but that is a very limited option for many people I know, including myself.

Another option would be more daycares on work-sites. I have several friends with that situation and it made the return to work so much smoother.

It's not exactly a picnic and our policies suck pretty bad, but I definitely don't think of T as a stranger I just handed my child to. I wish more moms didn't feel that way and could have better relationships with their children's caregivers because it makes a world of difference

@Tanjowen: I totally agree. It's a horrible choice to have to make, and unfortunately for a lot of women...it's not a choice at all. I'm the primary breadwinner and get no paid leave, other than my sick leave and vacation time, even though I need to have a medically necessary c-section. It SUCKS. It has made me hate my job and resent going back to it so soon. It definitely contributed to my post partum anxiety and recovery from childbirth as well.

I thought this was an interesting article and the chart on the right side of the page showing how the US stacks up against other countries kind of hurts.

I know I went part-time and have taken a big backseat in my career once LO arrived, because I had the opportunity and means to stay home, and when I was faced with the choice of handing over my 10 week old to strangers, guess which choice I made? I tell my DH all the time that if we had a policy that allowed at least 1 year of leave I would probably have gone back to work and been fine.
